REMINISCENCE (2021) Reviews of romantic sci-fi thriller with Hugh Jackman

Reminiscence is a 2021 American romantic science-fiction action thriller about a man who discovers a way to relive the past. He uses this new technology to search for his long lost love.

Written and directed by Lisa Joy (Westworld TV series) making her feature directorial debut. Co-produced by Joy, Jonathan Nolan, Michael De Luca and Aaron Ryder.

The Kilter Films-Michael De Luca-Filmnation Production stars Hugh Jackman, Rebecca Ferguson (Dune; Mission: Impossible franchise) Thandiwe Newton (Solo: A Star Wars Story), Cliff Curtis (The Meg; Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw), Marina de Tavira, Daniel Wu, Mojean Aria, Brett Cullen (Joker), Natalie Martinez, Angela Sarafyan and Nico Parker.

Plot:

Nick Bannister (Hugh Jackman) is a private investigator of the mind who navigates the darkly alluring world of the past by helping his clients access lost memories. Living on the fringes of the sunken Miami coast, his life is forever changed when he takes on a new client, Mae (Rebecca Ferguson).

A simple matter of lost and found becomes a dangerous obsession. As Bannister fights to find the truth about Mae’s disappearance, he uncovers a violent conspiracy, and must ultimately answer the question: how far would you go to hold on to the ones you love?

Reviews:

“From his cheesy narration (“Nothing is more addictive than the past,” Nick solemnly opines) to the movie’s double-crossing femme fatale and nocturnal, neon-lit setting, the director has great fun playing with genre tropes, but it’s unclear whether she’s going for heightened camp. Though the movie relies on CGI, there’s something analogue about its dystopia…” The Guardian

Production:

Lisa Joy’s creative team includes several of her Westworld collaborators, including director of photography Paul Cameron, production designer Howard Cummings, editor Mark Yoshikawa and composer Ramin Djawadi, along with costume designer Jennifer Starzyk.

Release date:

Warner Bros. Pictures released Reminiscence theatrically in the USA on August 20, 2021, and will be available on HBO Max in UHD, HDR10, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos on supported devices for 31 days from the theatrical release. Rated PG-13.
