GUNPOWDER MILKSHAKE (2021) Reviews of Netflix female-fronted action thriller

‘The mother of all action movies’

Gunpowder Milkshake is a 2021 action thriller film about three generations of women who have to fight back against the Firm.

Directed by Navot Papushado from a screenplay co-written with Ehud Lavski. The American/French/German co-production stars Karen Gillan, Carla Gugino, Lena Headey, Paul Giamatti, Freya Allan, Michelle Yeoh and Angela Bassett.

Sam (Karen Gillan) was only twelve years old when her mother Scarlet (Lena Headey), an elite assassin, was forced to abandon her. Sam was raised by The Firm, the ruthless crime syndicate her mother worked for.

Now, fifteen years later, Sam has followed in her mother’s footsteps and grown into a fierce hit-woman. She uses her “talents” to clean up The Firm’s most dangerous messes. She’s as efficient as she is loyal.

However, when a high-risk job goes wrong, Sam must choose between serving The Firm and protecting the life of an innocent eight-year-old girl – Emily (Chloe Coleman). With a target on her back, Sam has only one chance to survive: reunite with her mother and her lethal associates: The Librarians (Angela Bassett, Michelle Yeoh and Carla Gugino).

Gunpowder Milkshake skates by on its roster of female leads, clearly having an absolute blast, and a slew of well-crafted action set pieces. That’s all it has to offer, though […] Even still, it brings style, infectious energy from its protagonists, and several memorable action sequences that deliver enough amusing fun while it lasts.” Bloody Disgusting

“This film assuredly cares about these characters and the theme at hand regarding women rising up, although it never gets there for meaningful emotional impact. However, it is deliriously mad and idiosyncratic at just about every turn, even when the bullets fly. Story gripes aside, the brutal physicality of Karen Gillan’s performance is more than enough reason to watch Gunpowder Milkshake…” Flickering Myth

Gunpowder Milkshake isn’t big on details, but the way Navot Papushado works, every set is presented as if it were the backdrop in a music video, and the shot framing is so meticulous, so centered, that there isn’t a whisper of spontaneity to it. The movie is a bluntly stylized comic-book myth of kick-ass matriarchal empowerment.” Variety
