‘Someone’s gotta take the hit’
Copshop is a 2021 American action thriller set in a small police station and a battle between a hitman, a female rookie cop and a conman.
Directed by Joe Carnahan (Boss Level; Stretch; The Grey; The A-Team; Blood, Guts, Bullets and Octane) from a screenplay co-written with Kurt McLeod based on a story co-written by Mark Williams and Kurt McLeod. Co-produced by Joe Carnahan, Tai Duncan, Eric Gold, Warren Goz, Frank Grillo, Alan Siegel and Mark Williams.
Screaming through the Nevada desert in a bullet-ridden Crown Vic, wily con artist Teddy Murretto (Frank Grillo) hatches a desperate plan to hide out from lethal hitman Bob Viddick (Gerard Butler): He sucker-punches rookie officer Valerie Young (Alexis Louder) to get himself arrested and locked up in a small-town police station.
However, jail can’t protect Murretto for long. Viddick schemes his own way into detention, biding his time in a nearby cell until he can complete his mission. When the arrival of a competing assassin (Toby Huss) ignites all-out mayhem, mounting threats force Viddick to get creative if he wants to finish the job and escape the explosive situation…
“It would only have helped if the script had been a little less corny […] You can see from afar that there will be little left of the police station. Not a bad thing in itself, such a bad-to-worse structure can be quite effective, but it is mainly the macho irony that at some point starts to hang out. As a result, it is never really exciting, but also rarely funny.” Film Totaal [translated from Dutch]
“I found this more irritating than I probably should have, but when a movie shows so much effort at serving up machismo, tough talk and violence and so little at generating suspense, twists and logical surprises, I lose patience with it. This one just never seems to end, and when the illogical end arrives, a laughably dumb coda is layered on top of it.” Movie Nation
In the USA, Open Road Films will release Copshop theatrically on September 17, 2021.
