THE ICE DEMON (2021) Review, overview and release news

The Ice Demon is a 2021 horror film about a man’s sudden return home in a coma years after he’s gone missing; his family’s life is thrown into disarray as his homecoming brings with it some supernatural and terrifying events.

Directed by Ivan Kapitonov (co-producer of Dark Spell; The Widow; Baba Yaga: Terror of the Dark Forest; Mermaid: Lake of the Dead; Queen of Spades: The Dark Rite), making his feature debut. Produced by Kapitonov, alongside Svyatoslav Podgaevsky, Rafael Minasbekyan, Vadim Vereschagin and Alena Akimova.

The Russian Iney Productions/QS Films movie stars Alina Babak (Gogol. Viy; Queen of Spades: The Dark Rite), Alexandra Cherkasova-Sluzhitel (Major Grom: Plague Doctor; Cosmoball), Gleb Kalyuzhnyy (The Vampires of Midland series), Igor Khripunov (Dark Spell; Baba Yaga: Terror of the Dark Forest; Mermaid: Lake of the Dead; Ghouls aka Vamps; The Bride), Olga Lomonosova and Aleksey Rozin (Baba Yaga: Terror of the Dark Forest).

“Unsurprisingly, the most affectionate epithet one can choose when describing the creation called “Ice Demon” is terribly bad. I want to forget most of the dialogue […] What remains is poorly-written humour, that seems to be supposed to dilute the oppressive atmosphere of the approaching misfortune, but in fact, it works for its intended purpose (yes, when watching this Russian horror it will be more often funny than scary).” Kinoafisha [translated from Russian]

The Ice Demon was released in Russia on October 28, 2021.

Meanwhile, Shout! Studios have acquired North American rights to The Ice Demon and will release the film On-Demand and on Digital in the USA and Canada in Spring 2022.
