The Legend of La Llorona is a 2021 horror film in which a couple discover their son’s disappearance is tied to a supernatural curse.

Directed by Patricia Harris Seeley (Caution: May Contain Nuts; Puppy SOS and X-Weighted TV series) from a screenplay written by Jose Prendes (Unspeakable Horrors: The Plan 9 Conspiracy; Blood Brothers; Hansel vs. Gretel; Mega Shark vs Mecha Shark; The Haunting of Whaley House; Haunting of Winchester House) from a story by Cameron Larson (Jurassic Predator: Xtinction; Sand Sharks; Mysterious Island).

Produced by Antonio Cupo, Neil Impey, Cameron Larson, Jose Prendes and Trevor Seeley.

The Canadian-Mexican Ageless Pictures-GHSTWRTR co-production stars Autumn Reeser (The 27-Hour Day; Dead Trigger; Kill ‘Em All), Danny Trejo, Antonio Cupo, Josh Zaharia, Zamia Fandiño and Fernanda Aguilar.

Plot:

A malevolent spirit bent on vengeance, stalks a young family visiting Mexico. Andrew, Carly and their son Danny travel to an isolated hacienda in Mexico for a much-needed vacation. As they enter the town, signs showing missing children set an ominous tone. The family learns of the legend of “La Llorona,” the evil spirit of a distraught mother who lurks near the water’s edge and strikes fear in the hearts of all who see her.

La Llorona torments the family mercilessly, snatching Danny and trapping him in a netherworld between the living and the dead. Aided by the resourceful taxi driver Jorge (Danny Trejo) the family races to save their only child, navigating the foreboding countryside held by menacing cartel thugs.

Gaining strength and power and leaving a path of death and destruction in her wake, La Llorona is seemingly unstoppable. But a secret from Carly’s past may provide an opportunity to finally defeat the spirit…

Reviews:

“There’s a lot of promise in the beginning of The Legend of La Llorona, and thankfully, some of those stronger qualities of the film remain consistent throughout. It’s just a letdown then when the film presents more surface-level chills that undercut the moments of eeriness and somber auras.” Bloody Disgusting

“Aside from the shoestring budget that shows in nearly every frame of The Legend of La Llorona (save for some passable practical makeup effects on Maria), the problem here is the repetitiveness of the whole endeavor that feels as if the movie is a game of hot potato for Danny between the parents and La Llorona.” Flickering Myth

“There’s no escaping the film’s low budget. As such when La Llorona appears in her astral form it does somewhat disappoint. Though well integrated with her surroundings, the overall appearance cheapens the final product. The cast does an admirable job of adding dimensions to the script. Though over-simplistic, Reeser and Fandiño really work to bring their characters to life.” Get Your Comic On

” …I simply can’t recommend The Legend of La Llorona. It has poor characters, a poor villain, and an unnecessary major subplot, so while I loved how much Spanish was in the movie, on the whole, it starts 2022 off with a whimper instead of a bang.” Horror Obsessive
