Piggy is a 2022 horror revenge drama about an overweight teen who is bullied by a clique of girls while holidaying in her village.

Written and directed by Carlota Pereda (The Chapel) based on her short film, Cerdita.

The Spanish production stars Laura Galán, Claudia Salas, Pilar Castro, Camille Aguilar, Carmen Machi, José Pastor, Julián Valcárcel and Irene Ferreiro.

Plot:
Sara carries an extra load of teenage agony due to the perpetual bullying from her peers. She’s also an outsider at home. Her parents and little brother just don’t understand her. So, she’s often found buried in her headphones, drowning out her surroundings.

One day, Sara’s usual solo dip at the local pool is disrupted by the presence of a mysterious stranger in the water and an exceptionally gruelling bout of abuse at the hands of three girls. But, in a strange twist of fate, Sara witnesses her tormentors being kidnapped in the back of the stranger’s van.

Sara must decide whether to cooperate with the police and parents’ questioning about the kidnappings or take her own, unbridled path. She also discovers the power of desire and belonging, and the distinction between revenge and redemption…

Reviews:
Piggy gives viewers a lot to chew on in this intimate morality tale carried by Galán’s haunting performance. Every bit of Sara’s helplessness, fear, anguish, rage, and even attraction is tangible. Pereda casts an unflinching eye on Sara, making it feel even more personal through the aspect ratio and restraint in specific types of violence.” 3.5/5 Bloody Disgusting

“Expanded from the Spanish writer-director’s award-winning 2018 short of the same name, this disturbing psychological drama spirals into blood-drenched horror, its wild genre extremities never disguising the feeling that its social commentary on violence and abuse comes from a very real and personal place.” The Hollywood Reporter

“The film’s most frightening aspects are the behavior of human beings and the terror that the choices we make engender. It really brings home the idea that our actions, be they kindness or meanness, have consequences, but that also the actions that we don’t take have consequences too. Piggy (Cerdita) is a very artful film filled with ideas about empathy, some slasher goodness, fright, and horror set-pieces.” Nightmarish Conjurings

“There are no punches pulled when the going gets horrific, either, and the graphic violence is occasionally leavened with dark humor (a slashed throat transitioning to a sliced watermelon). A different kind of bloodshed occurs when Sara has her period while under duress in the police station–perhaps a knowing shout-out to Carrie in a movie that takes the revenge-of-the-bullied theme in different and even starker directions.” Rue Morgue

Piggy is no easy watch. People who’ve had experience with bullying will certainly relate, and there is definitely the temptation to put this in the “good for her” category of final-girl-horror (Ready or Not, Midsommar, Carrie), but the film has broader themes in mind. Make no mistake, though, the film is very violent in spots, though perhaps in this case the emotional violence outstrips the visceral kind.” Screen Anarchy

” …a bizarre, complex, and intriguing two-hander based on Sara’s belief that far from being a killer, the Unknown Man is her saviour, and it’s made even more compelling by the fact that there’s barely a word of dialogue between them. At one point, Pereda daringly frames them together as lovers against a sky lit by fireworks. ” Screen Daily
