Death Hunt is a 2022 Canadian action-thriller film about a couple that are taken hostage and then hunted… for sport.
Directed by Neil Mackay (Sixty Minutes to Midnight; Battleground) from a screenplay co-written with Sean McAulay. Produced by Greg Johnston and Frank Ieraci (who also co-stars)
The Rapid City Entertainment production also stars Marlene Malcolm, Rick Amsbury, Michael Coughlan, Greg Johnston, Omar Tucci and Peter Lewis.
Plot:
A developer and his mistress retreat to a getaway cottage where they are taken hostage brought to a remote island and hunted for sport by a group of men…
Our capsule review:
Even though it’s yet another variation on the overly-familair plotline from The Most Dangerous Game, Death Hunt is decently shot and presented – with an impressive classical score by Mitchell Gibbs – and above all, well-acted. There are obvious class conflict themes, plus the expected personality disagreements between the hunters but they aren’t laboured and neither are the exploitable elements (the hunters don’t force themselves on Brooke saying “we’re not animals”).
Just a glance at the poster and it should come as no surprise to anyone that the supposedly expert hunters are way more amateurish than they bragged about and Marlene Malcolm’s character fights back with aplomb. Death Hunt is formulaic for sure yet undeniably a step up from the usual hunting humans clichés.

Other reviews:
“There’s one surprising moment where Brooke is sure the men will assault her. And they reply, “No, we’re married.” I mean, they’ll still kill her. But they have morals. Marlene Malcolm goes all out in this and if this were the 90s, I’d be looking for her to be in a whole series of direct-to-video action movies.” B&S About Movies
“In part because Mackay has stripped the premise to its core elements, but more because Malcolm gives it everything she’s got, this flick works. It’s also beautifully photographed, which rings of irony considering it’s “aboot” the ugliest of humanity.” Flick Attack
“Death Hunt is an action horror thriller, using the concept of people hunting people. A style of horror we have seen a lot before. It needs something fresh to spice the concept up. This doesn’t do that, with random gun shooting, despite being hunters […] It never gets to let loose of everything it wants to work with.” 2 out of 5, Movie Reviews 101
“From The Most Dangerous Game to more recently The Hunt, seeing humans being hunted for sport is nothing new and that is my only criticism for what is an otherwise well-mounted and well-acted flick that will fit the bill nicely for an undemanding evening’s viewing.” 6 out of 10, My Bloody Reviews
“The action scenes are well enough done that overall the film works. The chase scenes and shootout are better than similar scenes in a lot of low-budget films. The blood, explosions, and muzzle flashes don’t look as cartoonish as in a lot of those films either. The seeming ineptitude of the seasoned hunters and the unexplained prowess of their intended victims does hurt the film.” 3.5 out of 5, Voices from the Balcony
