DEADSTREAM (2022) Reviews (SXSW) of comedy horror movie with Shudder news

Deadstream is a 2022 American comedy horror film about a disgraced internet personality who spends a night alone in a haunted house.

Written and directed by Joseph Winter – who also stars – and Vanessa Winter, making their feature film debut. Melanie Stone also stars.

Deadstream had its world premiere at the SXSW festival on March 11th 2022 in the Midnighter section.

Meanwhile, Deadline has reported that the film has been acquired by Shudder for streaming in North America, the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand.

A disgraced and demonetized internet personality (Joseph Winter) tries to win back his fans by live-streaming himself spending a night alone in an abandoned haunted house.

When he accidentally unleashes a vengeful spirit, his big comeback event becomes a real-time fight for his life (and social relevance) as he faces off with the sinister spirit of the house and her own powerful following…

“Despite the different vibe surrounding Deadstream, it never gets too far away from the horror aspect. The film harkens back to the 1980s with some amazing creature effects that will lead to squeals of terror and delight. Possibly more impressive is the use of horror tropes […] Here, things are clearly explained in some of the funniest scenes in the movie.” 9.5/10 AIPT

“…it understands the mechanics of the genre on a meticulous level and use that knowledge to create something wholly captivating that feels completely fresh. Deadstream is outrageous, delightful and deeply satisfying, a breath of fresh air in a genre that can far too often feel old and musty.” AWFJ

Deadstream is a DIY labor of love, and the filmmakers somehow make wearing so many hats seem effortless. Through its characters, human and otherwise, the small-scaled story feels larger than life. The story beats may not always surprise, but the clever progression, balance of physical horror and comedy, and the go for broke gags ensure that doesn’t matter.” 4/5 Bloody Disgusting

” …humorously shuns an obnoxious entertainer stuck within an ’80s creature feature, frequently with a sharpened wit because simplicity provides no distractions […] Deadstream is a cheekily chilling vlog-life satire that scores its shivers and smashes more than like buttons…” 7.5/10 /Film

“Though this is absolutely Winter’s show, Melanie Stone also provides solid support in a role that’s probably best left for audiences to discover for themselves. Found footage fatigue be-damned, Deadstream proves there’s still room for both thrills and creativity in the oversaturated genre.” Flickering Myth

“The low budget production and practical effects draw an obvious comparison to Raimi’s work, but it’s also Deadstream‘s tonal changes that display plenty of similarities. Like Raimi’s classic, Deadstream effortlessly transitions from scare moments to gross gags, meaning that the audience will be squealing in one scene and guffawing in the next.” The Hollywood News

Deadstream is a novel take on paranormal found footage, taking the cake for its grossout ghouls, and inventive additions to a typically understated subgenre. A sensory assault of monsters and myths, it’s a hilarious fright from start to finish.” 91% Nightmare on Film Street

“Overall, Deadstream is scary fun and a worthwhile addition to the found-footage subgenre. It does suffer from budget limitations and the character of Shawn can get grating at times, but it more than makes up for that with skilled practical effects, grotesque creature design, and unfiltered humor.” Nightmarish Conjurings

“Tackling the cesspool that is for profit livestreaming was a risky move, but Deadstream captures its potential with gusto. Beyond creating a perfect host in Shawn, the script also does a bang-up job capturing the fickle nature of nerds behind keyboards […] It does devolve on occasion into live-action videogame fetch-quest territory, but it’s easy to forgive small digressions given how much the film gets right.” Screen Anarchy

Deadstream was a true collaboration from our small and dedicated crew, who took big swings with limited resources,” the directors said in a statement shared by Deadline today. “We’re huge fans of Shudder’s wildly unique and exciting content and we couldn’t be happier to be partnering with them for the release of our film.”

Shudder GM Craig Engler added: “Deadstream is wickedly crowd-pleasing, the rare horror-comedy as frightening as it is funny. We’re thrilled to welcome Joseph and Vanessa Winter’s creative, creepy and relentless gem to Shudder.”
