The Cow is a 2022 American comedy horror film about a couple that encounters a strange younger couple in a cabin in the woods.
Directed by Eli Horowitz from a screenplay co-written with Matthew Derby. Produced by Raphael Margules, J.D. Lifshitz, Shaun Sanghani and Russ Posternak.
The movie stars Winona Ryder, Dermot Mulroney, John Gallagher Jr., Owen Teague, Brianne Tju, Dustin Ingram, Nina E. Jordan and Alain Uy.
When Kath and her boyfriend arrive at a remote cabin in the redwoods, they find a mysterious younger couple already there. Her boyfriend disappears with the young woman, and Kath becomes obsessed with finding an explanation.
“It’s Tju and Teague who set the tone particularly well for this unsettling journey, one that feels like it could feature more supporting players and a more expansive universe. But that seems to be part of the approach, that Kath’s search is a relatively lonely one, which only makes it more unnerving, bringing viewers along for a ride that’s not ultimately very fulfilling.” B- Cinema Daily US
“All in all, it’s tough to get much worked up about a modest thriller that’s decently acted and sufficiently compelling for its first two thirds before sputtering out at the finish, even if it’s clear that with some refinements Horowitz’s film might’ve found a more nimble synthesis of schlocky thrills and social commentary.” 3/5 Flickering Myth
” …The Cow continues jigsawing around in what increasingly feels like a futile bid to distract from the fact that there’s no story there. Scenes unfold with anesthetizing sameness and little discernible effort by the filmmakers to toy with our nerves or tinker with our expectations. Ryder can make even the dumbest bit of dialogue sing, but her character, as written, is a bore.” The Hollywood Reporter
“With one of the darkest, wildest final acts I have seen recently, The Cow is a genuinely great thriller with Winona Ryder in her element. I don’t know that I have a better way to recommend it; point blank, if you love Winona Ryder, there is no conceivable way you will not also love The Cow.” 3.5/5 Josh at the Movies
“The Cow deserves points for eventually laying all its cards on the table without blinking, and there’s a certain satisfaction to be had from how twisted things become. But getting there is a chore and a half, and The Cow lacks anything resembling momentum. The random flashbacks feel like they were added quickly in post…” 4/10 Slash Film
” …what’s most notable about Horowitz and co-writer Matthew Derby’s greatly entertaining work here is the utilization of genre as a moldable frame to distil real-world anxieties about the passage of time and who we become when the years and decades start piling on. Their aim regarding how to flesh out some of the plot traps they set is not always on target, but the philosophical foundation feels fresh.” The Wrap
The Cow had its world premiere at the South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival in March 2022.
