The Marvel Studios production stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange, alongside Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, Michael Stuhlbarg and Rachel McAdams.

The film is set a few months after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021). Doctor Stephen Strange, with the help of both old and new mystical allies, travels into the multiverse to face a mysterious new adversary…

” …everything this film leaves off the table is in service of nailing a consistent, confident sense of filmmaking purpose, and it could be the most watchable Raimi film. What’s more, it works as a neatly sealed, self-contained story of both world-saving stakes and intimate character growth, all while allowing a filmmaker’s vision to be heeded more than the demands of the MCU narrative.” Ars Technica

” …as thrilling as seeing Strange encounter all types of horror as he races through set pieces can be, this sequel is less interested in forging new ground than repeating the same story and character beats from other MCU movies. It’s an entertaining and spooky romp and not much else. That’s okay. Especially if it brings more horror to the MCU.” 3/5 Bloody Disgusting

” …it’s definitely a harder, more violent, and macabre outing than we’ve seen from Marvel to date. It also doesn’t always land right; it’s shaggy and occasionally jumps its own tracks. But it will please the legions of established fans by embracing the comic book weirdness of it all with vigor and abandon, as Sam Raimi creates possibly the MCU’s most off-the-wall entry yet.” 4/5 Den of Geek

“The film is never terrifying, but it is filled with creepy imagery, atmospheric dread, and moments of visceral violence […] Sam Raimi is maddeningly restrained by Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness and Marvel overlords, stuck with relatively weak material (and far too many plot strands to juggle) that is only digestible and exciting to watch for its special effects.” Flickering Myth

“The multiverse madness is treated with genial high-energy panache, though I have to say that this infinite profusion of realities does not actually feel all that different in practice from the shapeshifting, retconning world of all the other Avengers films. And infinite realities tend to reduce the dramatic impact of any one single reality, and reduces what there is at stake in a given situation. Nonetheless, it’s handled with lightness and fun.” 3/5 The Guardian

“Are there aspects of Sam Raimi’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness that could be better? Definitely. The script is downright hokey sometimes, and there are odd moments that are weird for the sake of it without adding anything to the overall lore or character development. That said, it’s got a score that’s to die for, some rockin’ performances, and fans will never once be bored!” 7/10 IGN

“The Raimi who directed the original Spider-Man trilogy offers us a handful of sequences that feel like they could have been ripped out of the pages of a comic. They delight in the earnestly goofy heroics of pure-hearted superheroes. But Multiverse of Madness is, inevitably, a Raimi film in aesthetics only – a little like if you pampered a sewer rat, popped a pink bow on its head, and sold it as a chihuahua.” 2/5 Independent (UK)

“The film is dotted by impressively imaginative action sequences – one standout sees the sorcerer lift notes from a page of classical sheet music to wield as magical weapons; in another, a sinister red mist envelops an all-white dreamscape with eerie beauty. It teeters on the verge of outright goofiness at times, with its excessive magical lore and mouthfuls of esoteric lines…” iNews
