‘Brace yourself’
Minions: The Rise of Gru is a 2022 animated comedy film about a twelve-year-old’s dream of becoming the world’s greatest supervillain.

Directed by Kyle Balda (The Lorax; Minions; Despicable Me 3) and co-directed by Brad Ableson and Jonathan del Val (The Secret Life of Pets 2) from a script co-written by Brian Lynch and Matthew Fogel. Based on characters created by Cinco Paul. Produced by Chris Meledandri, Janet Healy and Chris Renaud.

Minions: The Rise of Gru was released recently and has already grossed a total of $221.6 million against a budget of around $85 million. This could partly be because of this TikTok trend in which male teens dress up in suits en masse at cinemas using the hashtag #GentleMinions:

Plot:
In the heart of the 1970s, amid a flurry of feathered hair and flared jeans, Gru (Steve Carell) is growing up in the suburbs. A fanboy of a supervillain supergroup known as the Vicious 6, Gru hatches a plan to become evil enough to join them.

Luckily, he gets some mayhem-making backup from his loyal followers, the Minions. Together, Kevin, Stuart, Bob, and Otto—a new Minion sporting braces and a desperate need to please—deploy their skills as they and Gru build their first lair, experiment with their first weapons and pull off their first missions…

Reviews:
“Although the character of Gru is mildly funny, the minions are unfunny without him and have never convincingly attained spin-off hero status. This is another of those intellectual property concepts whose trademarked quirky voices and characters should be laid to rest.” 2 out of 5, The Guardian

Rise of Gru is kind of frantic and over-the-top violent. But that’s something to embrace. This may be the most wound-up, slo-mo, cartoonish slapstick animated film since the golden Looney Tunes age of Tex Avery and Chuck Jones. Bodies and faces distorted by collisions and kicks, eyes bugging out in terror, all vintage Looney touches.” 3.5 out of 4, Movie Nation

“We get a lively, beautiful film to look at as Gru and the minions have multiple adventures going. And those adventures are amusing. Illumination gets a lot of crap for the tone of their movies, but I love looking at The Rise of Gru, and the visual invention we get, from the Criminal Records lair, with its listening booths, to a Chinese New Year parade in Chinatown.” Sonic Cinema

“These films have always excelled in worldbuilding, and here is no exception. If there is a way to both build the world and tell a joke simultaneously, this film is here for it. Of the new additions, I have to say that my favourite was a Nun who uses nunchucks, who is called Nunchuck (Lucy Lawless), and I am not sorry for just how much that made me laugh throughout the film…” TL;DR Movie Reviews and Analysis

“This overly familiar franchise could use a chapter where misguided Gru really does manage to be evil for a time. Instead, everything here is in service of either a laugh or an easy emotional reaction (Balda pulls the Puss in Boots trick of making the Minions’ eyes real big when they’re trying to get their way). Six months into 2022, it’s the funniest film Hollywood has produced thus far.” Variety

Release:
In the United States, Universal will release Minions: The Rise of Gru theatrically on July 1st 2022.
