Blue Beetle has officially wrapped principal production according to Puerto Rico-born director Angel Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings; The Farm) via an Instagram post. The Latin-focused superhero film stars Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai) in the titular role as Jaime Reyes.

Based on a comic book character who first appeared way back in 1939 (DC bought the rights in 1983), the movie is about a Mexican teenager in El Paso who finds an alien beetle that gives him superpowered armour. The extraterrestrial attaches to his spine which increases his strength and speed. Plus, like Green Lantern, he has the ability to create weapons and shields.

Principal photography on Puerto Rico marks the end of a production that also included filming in several cities such as Atlanta, Georgia and El Paso, Texas. Several on-set images of Xolo Maridueña as Blue Beetle have appeared online during production but the official promo for the movie hasn’t yet begun. DC fans are maybe expecting some reveals at San Diego Comic-Con soon, although at this stage that is just speculation.

Aside from star Xolo Maridueña, the Latin-centric cast includes Brazilian star Bruna Marquezine as Jaime Reyes’ love interest, plus Belissa Escobedo, Harvey Guillén and George Lopez. Villains are played by Susan Sarandon as Victoria Kord and Raoul Max Trujillo as Carapax the Indestructible Man. The first DC Extended Universe (DCEU) film featuring a Latin superhero was adapted from a screenplay penned by Mexican writer Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer. The movie is produced by John Rickard.

Initially set for an HBO Max release, Blue Beetle is now being released theatrically by Warner Bros on August 18, 2023.
