Summoners is a 2022 American horror film about a young woman and former witch who is drawn back to dark spells.

Directed by Terence Krey from a screenplay co-written with Christine Nyland (An Unquiet Grave) who also stars.

The Unquiet Films production also stars McLean Peterson, Larry Fessenden, Madeline Grey DeFreece, Margaret Reed, Meghan Jones and Kate Warren.

Plot synopsis:
Jessica Whitman (Christine Nyland) isn’t a witch. Not anymore, at least. She left it behind when she left her hometown almost ten years ago. However, when a childhood friend Alana Wheeler (McLean Peterson) needs her help performing a dark spell, she finds herself questioning her sense of right and wrong, and grappling with her late mother’s secrets…

Release:
Summoners had its world premiere at the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival whose organisers describe it as a “deeply humanistic chiller” on October 18, 2022. The movie is presented by Shudder so will presumably be available for streaming via their platform in future.

Reviews:

” …while the horror in Summoners comes in a decidedly low key, this is not merely a reflection of the filmmakers’ budget, but a way of conveying the everyday miracle in our efforts to work through unresolved feelings, to find forgiveness and to make personal sacrifices in the name of redemption. “Things hurt. Life hurts. You can’t just magic it away,” Jess tells Alana – but in the end, sisterhood itself will prove the best way to share the burden of agony, sorrow and nostalgia’s evil twin, regret.” Projected Figures

Summoner is a strong film both as a supernatural tale and as a drama. It probably won’t satisfy fans looking for a full-on horror film, despite a couple of strong scenes. But those who like the filmmaker’s other films, or fans of slow-burning films in general should be quite satisfied as will fans of dramas who don’t mind the witchcraft angle.” 4/5, Voices from the Balcony
