Munafik – translation: “Hypocrite” – is a 2016 Malaysian supernatural horror film written and directed by Syamsul Yusof. The movie stars Syamsul Yusof, Nabila Huda and Fizz Fairuz.
Plot:
Adam, a traditional religious medical practitioner, and his wife got into an accident that caused his wife’s death. Adam struggles to cope with the loss of his wife, which has shaken his strong faith in religion, and also stopped him helping cure others as he feels ‘incompetent’ in his job.
He eventually meets Maria, who has suffered from depression. She becomes possessed by an evil spirit and so Adam has no choice but have to help cure her. However, he stumbles upon more mysterious revelations linking Maria to the accident that killed his wife. An exorcism seems the only course of action..
Release:
The film was budgeted at RM1.6 million and took RM17 million at the Malaysian box office. A sequel, Munafik 2, was released in 2019.
