The Gravedigger is a 2019 American science-fiction horror film directed by Erynn Dalton, making her feature debut, from a screenplay written by Joseph Zettelmaier.

The Infinite Abyss Productions movie stars Paul Homza, Arlette Del Tor, Gisbert Heuer and Tyler Charles Kane.

Plot:
Set in the late 1700s, in one of Bavaria’s forgotten cemeteries, a lone gravedigger discovers a hideously scarred man hiding in a fresh grave. What the gravedigger doesn’t know is that the man is none other than the monster created by a mad doctor.

What the scarred man doesn’t know is the gravedigger’s hand in his creation. And what neither men know is that they are hunted by their shared past…

Reviews:
“The dialogue, true to the 19th century, is highly theatrical in language and delivery; the plot rarely straying far from Shelley’s novel. As such, it loses none of the drama of the original, although the warm relationship between man and monster as well as Kurt’s grounded geniality lend a lighter note to this version. Anton’s emotional breast-beating is unfortunately overplayed…” 6.5 out of 10, Horror Buzz

The Gravedigger makes a sincere attempt to do something different with the familiar tale of Victor and his creation. But it’s brought down by a lack of budget, technical problems as well as some issues with the script and performances. It might be worth a watch on Tubi or a similar platform but that’s about it.” 2 out of 5, Voices from the Balcony

Background:
“I’ve always been drawn to gothic horror stories with complex characters that can’t easily be labelled as ‘good’ or ‘evil’, which is why I chose The Gravedigger for my first feature,” director Erynn Dalton explained.

“Also, Joseph Zettelmaier (the writer) did such a beautiful job adding new dimensions to Mary Shelley’s classic ‘Frankenstein’ characters that I think the story will feel fresh and really resonate with the audience.

Release:
The Gravedigger will be released on DVD and Digital by Indican Pictures on August 30, 2022.

Cast and characters:
Paul Homza … Kurt Volker
Arlette Del Toro … Nadya
Gisbert Heuer … Anton/The Monster
