DEAD DICKS (2019) Reviews and overview

Dead Dicks will be released on Blu-ray and DVD plus VOD and streaming on July 28th, 2020 by Artsploitation Films.

Dead Dicks is a 2019 Canadian science fiction horror film about a woman who rushes to her suicidal brother only to find clones of his dead body.

Written and directed by Chris Bavota and Lee Paula Springer, the Postal Code Films-Red Clay Pictures production stars Heston Horwin, Jillian Harris, Matt Keyes and Kristina Sandev.

Plot:
After Becca (Jillian Harris) receives a distressing call from her suicidal brother Richie (Heston Horwin), she rushes over to his apartment and finds him alive and well – surrounded by copies of his own dead body!

Reviews:
“Bavota and Springer’s film is initially a bit shaky and takes a while to find its feet. When it does eventually hit its stride it’s a sci-fi film full of clever ideas and neat twists […] Dead Dicks is an ingenious and imaginative slice of genre cinema.” Backseat Mafia

“The mechanism that allows Dick to keep coming back is plain to see and understand but the different developing mutations of the process range from grotesque to surprising the latter in an Invasion of the Body Snatchers-John Carpenter The Thing type of way.” Flick Hunter

Dead Dicks deals in gritty, tough-love drama, eerie body horror, and surreal happenings in everyday surroundings. Harris and Horwin are both superb in their roles, bringing their desperate, world-weary characters to grueling life. Bavota and Springer don’t shy away from the real-life horrors of depression, abandonment, and suicidal thoughts.” Horror Fuel

” …it’s really hard to tell what tone Dead Dicks is going for: at times, jokes and comedic elements are thrown in but, since the execution is so poor, you can’t even tell whether the movie is being a horror-comedy or just an unintentionally funny disaster. The acting doesn’t help either.” Horror World & Reviews

“At heart, it’s a powerful character-driven piece about a troubled young man – played without condescension by Horwin […] It’s an extremely well-acted, perceptive portrait of mental illness, but also a fascinating, original riff on familiar genre themes, with effective use of gore and an evocative score by Julien Verschooris.” HorrorScreams VideoVault

“Of course the idea of an odd situation (in this case the @rse-on-the-wall) isn’t that new […] However with Dead Dicks the bizarreness of the growth, the fact Ritchie can’t die and the general all-round weirdness of this story is only a hook on which to hang one of the most touching, powerful, emotional tales I’ve ever seen in horror cinema.” Nerdly

“Clearly made with extremely modest means, Dead Dicks is just as clearly the work of filmmakers, a cast and craft team with talent to burn. It delivers on the creep factor and keeps us off-balance and intrigued while rooting us in the concerns of its central duo.” Rue Morgue

Dead Dicks is at once funny, touching, compelling, and morbidly watchable. It also boasts one of the best screenplays this year; intelligent, strange, and well, let me stop gushing before I run out of superlatives.” Sordid Cinema

Dead Dicks’ low production value – evident from the beginning – may suggest to the viewer that this is a film of little merit or worth. However, this initial fronting belies a solid science-fiction film which, besides a few issues here and there, is well worth your time. Come for the gore-laden sci-fi, stay for the movie’s substance on mental illness.” UK Film Review
