Reviews:
“There are few comforting or calm moments to be found throughout this utterly stressful viewing experience, but Merlant’s controlled performance grounds it when there’s nothing but chaos around her. It should be treated as a cautionary tale rather than a preview of the hell new parents can expect.” Grade: B, The Film Experience

“Merlant is absolutely sublime in her portrayal of the increasingly unhinged Jo, running through the gamut of emotions and displaying them all splendidly with her eyes and facial expressions, not to mention verbally. Taut and tightly directed, with some dark humor on display as well, Baby Ruby comes highly recommended.” Horror Fuel

“Wohl uses some horror techniques here, from the sound design amplifying every baby cry until it gets under your skin, to some jump scares and inferences of the unthinkable. It does get a little repetitive by the end, but it’s a film that while celebrating the power and love of a mother, also understands that deep down the transition to motherhood is so much more than the societal expectation and image portrayed. It is difficult, can be lonely, and lead to mental health concerns.” 3.5 out of 5, Live for Film

Baby Ruby is a stressful and horrifying experience, but that’s how motherhood is, right? Wohl wants the conversation to shift without shaming women who feel alone and awful for sometimes just needing a break. I can totally see this movie either being triggering or played as comfort to mothers who see themselves onscreen not as monsters, but as women who need patience and love surrounding them as they go through one of the most stressful experiences of their lives.” Nightmarish Conjurings

Baby Ruby is a confident and piercing debut that uncovers unpleasant but vital truths about the experience of motherhood and post-partum depression. While there are hammy moments sprinkled about, they aren’t enough to sink this film’s inventive and sincere depiction of maternal unraveling. While it makes the prospect of parenthood deeply horrific and unsettling, it does meaningfully probe you into ruminating on the moment you finally become one…” Tilt
