Only the River Flows is a 2023 Chinese murder mystery film about a homicide detective investigating a series of murders in a rural village
Directed by Wei Shujun (Ripples of Life; Striding Into the Wind) from a screenplay co-written with Kang Chunlei, adapted from Yu Hua’s novel ‘Mistake by the River’. Produced by Xufeng Huang and Ying Liang.
The Dangdang Film-KXKH Films co-production stars Zhu Yilong (Lighting Up the Stars), Chloe Maayan (Long Day’s Journey Into Night), Hou Tianlai and Tong Linkai.
Plot:
In the 1990s, in Banpo Town, rural China. A woman’s body is found by the river. Ma Zhe (Zhu Yilong), Chief of the Criminal Police, heads up the murder investigation that quickly leads to an obvious arrest.
His superiors hurry to congratulate him and urge him to close the case and move on, but several clues push Ma Zhe to delve deeper into the hidden behaviour of his fellow citizens…
Release:
The film will premiere at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival in May 2023 playing in the Un Certain Regard section.
