Blue Beetle is a 2023 American DC superhero film which stars Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai) in the titular role of Jaime Reyes.
Directed by Puerto Rico-born filmmaker Angel Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings; The Farm) based on a screenplay written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (Miss Bala). The movie is produced by John Rickard.
Based on a comic book character who first appeared way back in 1939 (DC bought the rights in 1983), the movie is about a Mexican teenager in El Paso who finds an alien beetle that gives him superpowered armour. The extraterrestrial attaches to his spine which increases his strength and speed. Plus, like Green Lantern, he has the ability to create weapons and shields.
Aside from star Xolo Maridueña, the Latin-centric cast includes Brazilian star Bruna Marquezine as Jaime Reyes’ love interest, plus Belissa Escobedo, Harvey Guillén and George Lopez. Villains are played by Susan Sarandon as Victoria Kord and Raoul Max Trujillo as Carapax the Indestructible Man.

Initially set for an HBO Max release, Blue Beetle is now being released theatrically by Warner Bros on August 18, 2023.
Filming:
Principal photography in Puerto Rico marked the end of a production in July 2022 that also included filming in several cities such as Atlanta, Georgia and El Paso, Texas.
