‘Meet AIA she’s here to help’
AFRAID is a 2024 sci-fi horror film about a family chosen to test a new AI device with predictably scary results.
The movie was written, directed and co-produced by Chris Weitz (Operation Finale; Twilight: The New Moon; The Golden Compass; About a Boy; Down to Earth). It was also produced by Jason Blum and Andrew Miano and executive produced by Dan Balgoyen, Paul O. Davis, Britta Rowings and Beatriz Sequeira.

The movie stars John Cho (Searching), Katherine Waterston (Alien: Covenant), Havana Rose Liu, Lukita Maxwell, David Dastmalchian (Late Night with the Devil) and Keith Carradine.
Plot:
Curtis (John Cho) and his family are selected to test a revolutionary new home device: a digital family assistant called AIA. Taking smart home to the next level, once the unit and all its sensors and cameras are installed in their home, AIA seems able to do it all. “She” learns the family’s behaviours and begins to anticipate their needs. And soon she can make sure nothing — and no one — gets in the family’s way…

Reviews:
“Afraid could have been a much better movie if it truly had something clever to say about how A.I. can cause fear and destruction if not handled properly. The acting performances are solid and are not this movie’s big failings. The screenplay and direction are the weakest links and offer just a mishmash of half-baked ideas.” Culture Mix
“Although the film’s title is AfrAId, it’s not a palpably scary horror film like T.I.M. nor a dark comedy like Meagan. The modicum of scares are more psychological in the sense that AIA has seemingly unlimited power and control. How far will she go? Fortunately, the third act, which won’t be spoiled here, has an refreshingly unconventional twist up its sleeve which ends the film on an effectively chilling note.” The NYC Movie Guru
“The third act amounts to little besides dizzying cinematic whiplash. Weitz hurls a small series of twists at his audience, all of which half-baked because his script never took time to develop AIA, the company behind her, or much of anything. AfrAId is a thriller whose own intelligence is artificial at best, yet it’s one of the better kinds of bad movies, for it’s short and, in some ways, outright dismissive of the many ways in which it sucks.” Steve Pulaski
