‘There’s an outbreak in the outback’
Rippy is a 2024 comedy horror film in which a remote Australian outback town is terrorised by a monstrous giant zombie kangaroo. Formerly known as The Red
Blurb:
“Radioactive is excited to announce the theatrical release of The Red, an outrageous comedy horror set in the Australian outback, starring what promises to be Australia’s next iconic personality: Rippy—the giant zombie kangaroo. Rippy is your average bloke by day, and a terrifying Zombie Kangaroo by night.

In The Red, this unforgettable character is hell-bent on terrorising the remote town of Axehead and is set to become a beloved fixture in the international comedy/horror genre. Alongside Rippy, the film features an all-star Aussie cast, including Terminator and Alien legend Michael Biehn, Australian acting royalty Angie Milliken, Mystery Road’s Aaron Pedersen, and rising star Tess Haubrich.
Producer Jessica Butland shares her excitement: “This film is a wild ride from start to finish, delivering everything creature feature fans would expect from such an outrageous concept! It also delivers for mainstream audiences with its throwback to classic Aussie slang and pop culture.”
Building on the success of his 2014 short film Waterbourne, director Ryan Coonan brought this absurdly bloody tale to life. “The Red is a horror comedy film influenced by classic creature features such as The Thing, An American Werewolf in London, Jaws and Razorback.”

Plot:
Young police officer Maddy (Tess Haubrich) is determined to live up to her deceased father’s legacy. Her courage is put to the test when locals are found brutally ripped to shreds by a zombie kangaroo. As the undead beast leaves a trail of carnage, Maddy, with the help of her eccentric uncle Schmitty (Michael Biehn) and resilient aunt Donna (Angie Milliken), must embark on a high-stakes battle to save the town…
Reviews:
” …it’s not a complete loss. Coonan pays careful attention to setting and mood and he brings out the natural beauty of the story’s rural setting. The characters aren’t too hastily drawn or disposable either. Ultimately, the appalling creature visuals are the biggest letdown in an already boilerplate movie with no distinct personality to call its own, but maybe those factors will draw audiences who enjoy schlocky material.” ★½ Bloody Disgusting

“The title creature in Rippy remains relentless, but Coonan can’t conjure enough scares to make his many appearances count […] Rippy is mature, well-intentioned and makes us care about the lives lost in the genre melee. It’s also a well-crafted slog.” Hollywood in Toto
“Rippy secures a distinctive spot within the horror-comedy genre by daringly embracing its unconventional premise while interlacing genuine character growth and depth into its framework. Offering both thrills and a thoughtful narrative, it stands out as a film that entertains and resonates with those who value a blend of chills and laughs. Despite its occasional missteps, its heartfelt storytelling and innovative approach position it as a potential cult favorite…” ★★½ Overly Honest Reviews
