Reviews:
“Modern found footage production has become so slick and sophisticated that it sometimes looks like a completely different sub-genre […] Invoking Yell is a throwback that looks like it was made during the 90s. This includes some of the same problems of films of the time such as pacing issues, but none of them take away from the overall enjoyment.” 8.5/10, AIPT
“Elements of the supernatural and occult rituals and riveting performances make the final act of Invoking Yell shocking, anxiety-inducing, and genuinely horrifying. Fans of found footage will especially enjoy this film and since the camera work is not the overly shaky style that makes some people feel sick, even those who aren’t huge fans of the subgenre should find something to like in this nightmarish tale.” ★★★★ Bloody Disgusting
“While it may skirt a bit too close to Blair Witch territory, this is a near perfect mix of metal and found footage. The finale leaves a bit to be desired, but it’s a compelling watch for anyone that had a camcorder.” ★★★½ CineDump
“By leaning into various black metal tropes while moving away from the more fascinating notes of the story, Invoking Yell becomes an unsurprising tale that does little to distract the audience from where it’s going. None of that is to say Invoking Yell isn’t a worthwhile watch, though. With a group of badass women and eerie atmospherics, this music compilation from Hell will satisfy anyone looking for a solid found footage horror flick.” ★★★ Killer Horror Critic
” …the story is a great idea, the performances are solid and I liked the found footage style. However, if you’re doing a film about black metal it needs to be extreme and this one never really “went there” and at times felt drawn out and repetitive despite a relatively tight 84-minute runtime. Despite those cons the film is definitely worth watching and I really dug the creative concept.” ★★★ The Scariest Things
” …the phenomenon of EVP has the capacity to trample my rational thoughts into mulch within minutes – and by its end credits Invoking Yell turns out to have been far more of a glimpse at the 90s black metal scene than a straightforward horror film. This it does better than the likes of Lords of Chaos, mind you, so there’s much to be said for it. Here’s a film which uses aspects of horror as much as it is a horror, and it may be lost on complete outsiders in some respects, but it’s appealing and evocative in plenty of ways.” Warped Perspective
