Plot:
A year after losing his wife in a Christmas Eve car crash, Manuel (Francisco Ortiz) still hasn’t recovered mentally. He lives alone with his cat Lúculo and initially ignores the news broadcast on his television about a fast-spreading pandemic, the TSJ Virus, that’s throwing the world into chaos… However, Manel is soon forced to seek shelter from the rabies-like disease which is sweeping the planet and he soon meets unlikely but essential travelling companions.

External collated reviews:
“The third act is somehow underwhelming and despite Apocalypse Z: The Beginning of the End concludes with a cliffhanger, I hope the sequel could do better the next time around. For now, this first instalment of Manel Loureiro’s book-to-film trilogy could only muster a well-acted but half-baked zombie thriller that doesn’t reach its fullest potential.” ★★½ Casey’s Movie Mania

” …Apocalypse Z is a thrilling and emotional watch. Despite some repetitive moments, the film does a great job of glueing us to the film throughout. All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable and adventurous watch.” ★★★½ Leisure Byte
“The film skillfully balances the personal and global crises, showing how the TSJ Virus mirrors the internal virus of sorrow that Manel has been carrying since the accident. Apocalypse Z isn’t just a story about a man surviving a viral pandemic—it’s a meditation on loss, resilience, and the unexpected ways trauma can shape a person’s ability to confront new challenges. With Ortiz’s nuanced performance and a gripping, apocalyptic backdrop, the film is both a heart-wrenching drama and a tense survival thriller.” 7/10 Midgard Times

“From what I’ve read, the film makes some major changes from Loureiro’s original, so fans of the books may be disappointed. Overall, though, I thought Apocalypse Z was an entertaining film that should have a stronger appeal to fans of more recent zombie films than those of us who prefer the old-school gut munchers.” ★★★ Voices from the Balcony
