A corporate troubleshooter (Kate Mara) is sent to a remote, top-secret location, where she is to investigate and evaluate a terrifying accident. She learns the event was triggered by a seemingly innocent “human,” who presents a mystery of both infinite promise and incalculable danger…

Morgan is the pistol whipping, flesh eating, test tube baby of this sloppy scientific experiment that combines elements from Vincenzo Natali’s Splice and last year’s Academy Award winning Ex Machina. The sci-fi thriller resorts to inducing its audience into a comatose-like state only to wake up to mediocrity, an overused storyline, and performances completely devoid of any actual acting.” Chris Sawin, Reel Rundown

Morgan is the first feature directed by Luke Scott, the son of Ridley Scott (who serves as one of the producers), and it’s little more than a schlock replay of Ex Machina. It toys around with some of the same situations, but it doesn’t know where to take them. Instead of developing its themes, it uses them as grist for an overload of “commercial” action.” Owen Gleiberman, Variety

“Mr. Scott creates a disappointingly skeletal Frankenstein story that entertains efficiently but vacuously. Like a shorthand version of last year’s gloriously unsettling Ex Machina…” Jeanette Catsoulis, The New York Times

“Debutant director Luke Scott, son of Ridley, initially suggests a Blade Runner-esque debate: who’s the more inhuman, the killer robot or the ruthless human sent to stop them? But the story he tells has turned out far less successfully. It’s beautifully shot and the performances are fine as far as they go … but it can’t conceal the lack of a solid core.” Helen O’Hara, Empire

morganMorgan boils down to the sight of two monotone, indomitable women in uniforms of sorts—Morgan’s fuzzy gray hoodie and beat-up converse; Lee’s dress shirt and high heels—squaring off, sometimes separated by glass, sometimes not. It would be a stretch to call the movie any kind of feminist statement, but it does boast an equal-opportunity nastiness alongside its enjoyable stupidities.” Jesse Hassenger, A.V. Club

” …what little direction there is, is fairly sloppy; at times, Scott attempts to show some foreshadowing or overt subtext through mirroring, or music and sound cues of foreboding, but these are either forced, or lacking in quality that I’m surprised no one fixed the problems. Even the ‘twist’ can be seen within the first few scenes, and its revelation to (presumably) nobody is anti-climactic.” Shelagh Rowan-Legg, Screen Anarchy
