After the Lethargy aka Alien Invasion is a 2017 Spanish science fiction horror film written and directed by Marc Carreté (director of Asmodexia, executive and line producer of FRAMED) for his new Creatures of the Dark genre project. The movie stars Liliana Cabal, Andrea Guasch, Joe Manjón, Mark Schardan, Ramon Canals and Jose Garcia.
Plot:
Sara (Andrea Guasch) travels to the hot spot in which supposedly one of the most extraordinary contact episodes with extraterrestrials in history took place. The forest ranger (Joe Manjón) and a sinister villager (Ramon Canals), accompany the girl, helping her to overcome the dangers that nature entails.
However, despite good intentions, they will soon be attacked by a creature that lives in the depths of the forest, being forced to take refuge in an old abandoned military barracks…
Reviews:
“I can confidently say that the script and the acting are often risible. To be kind, I shall put this down to the dialogue having been written in a second language, but the acting is so stilted and strange it almost goes into parody, which some of the time I suspect it is. It’s not even clear what the title After the Lethargy means.” Ren Zelen, Horror DNA
” …another film in which bedraggled women are chained up in a basement and inseminated on filthy mattresses, though – and a brief revival of ‘80s-style parturition gore as one subject cuts her hybrid alien foetus out of her womb hardly makes things better. The unappealing title also has the feel of something random stuck on at the last minute.’ The Kim Newman Web Site
” …the second act descends into familiar and uninspired territory as Sara makes some shocking and disturbing discoveries about the barracks and their past and present use while running and screaming a lot. As the special effects increase it is easier to see their limitations and the same is true for the story which begins to unravel running out of steam at the end which is a real shame.” Love Horror
“The story is basic and you can predict what’s going to happen with some accuracy way before the movie has got there, and it has a less than hour and a half runtime. It feels longer. Some of the acting leaves a bit to be desired, but Guasch and Manjon perform their parts well and work well together, carrying the movie which is what it needs.” OC Movie Reviews
“After the Lethargy is a hybrid film, bringing alien abductions, military experiments and backwoods dysfunction into a perverse union, and seeing what monstrosities emerge. Once again Carreté deftly traverses genre’s shadowy borderlands, locating the most aggressive and invasive brand of otherness in the human, and along the way breeding a novel blend of sci-fi horror.” Anton Bitel, Projected Figures
” …some may run out of patience before it hits its stride, but those who stick around should find something in its grisly left-turn. Better pacing and a little realisation that some special effects were not that special means that After The Lethargy remains OK rather than excellent but the central idea is a very good and rather horrific one.” Scaredsheepless
