‘Coming of age at the end of the universe’

Assassinaut is a 2015 American science fiction horror film written and directed by Drew Bolduc (Science Team; The Taint; special effects on Return to Nuke ‘Em High Volume 1 and 2). The Ultra Fuchsia production stars Vito Trigo, Johnathan Newport, Shannon Hutchinson, Jasmina Parent and Yael Haskal.

Plot:

In the near future, aliens have invaded Earth and declared a galactic war resulting in thousands of human casualties.

To save Earth, a team of four teenage astronauts brave the alien wilderness of a distant planet to stop an assassin from changing the course of history forever…

Reviews:

“The individual components that make up Assassinault may make it sound like an unwieldy Frankenstein’s monster of a genre flick, but the film brings together its unusual collection of plot twists into an impressively consistent and ambitious whole. If you have the chance to see it, I highly recommend you do so.” Daily Grindhouse

“It’s somehow both charming and twisted, with an emotional core so strong it will knock you off your feet. If anything, it’s a testament to the power of story and performance to sell a film, with plentiful gore thrown in for good measure. Assassinaut is a low-budget sci fi horror treat that surprises in every way.” Nightmare on Film Street

” …the practical effects were a blast to witness […] very David Cronenberg, and I loved it!  From squirming alien fish to bursting pustules, the gore was intense and well done, without being overdone. Assassinaut is great storytelling combined with visuals you won’t forget…” Nightmarish Conjurings

“Though Assassinaut mashes together several types of genre films in its lean, 80ish-minutes running time, it avoids pastiche. It is fun throughout, and it should bring many smiles to cinephiles of all different stripes.” The Scariest Things

“The first hour, in fact, is almost like The Goonies in space, or maybe Prospect […] By the final fade out, Assassinaut has gone from a light adventure to a grim sci-fi horror hybrid and then to just plain weird. It’s done with style and enthusiasm, but it’s never quite cohesive enough to be a full success.” Voices from the Balcony

“With a cast of kids, an over the top character in The Commander (Vito Trigo) and practical effects on a budget, Bolduc provides a feature that may be low on production values but is entertaining. Assassinaut is the kind of story we would make up as children, played out on the big screen.” Without Your Head

Release:

Assassinaut will be released by Epic Pictures’ Dread imprint on Blu-ray and VOD on July 30, 2019.
