3 FROM HELL (2019) Reviews and overview

3 from Hell is a 2019 American action crime horror film written and directed by Rob Zombie (31; The Lords of Salem; Halloween and sequel). The movie stars Sid HaigSheri Moon Zombie and Bill Moseley, reprising their roles from The Devil’s Rejects (2005), despite the fact that their characters died in that movie! The latter was a sequel to House of 1000 Corpses (2000). Sid Haig was unwell during production (he subsequently died on September 21st 2019, just after the film’s release) so the role of one of the central protagonists was taken on by Richard Brake.

“While I do still wish the ending of The Devil’s Rejects had been the end for these characters, I did find 3 from Hell to be a decent sequel. I enjoyed watching it and will be watching it again. Now hopefully someone will give Zombie the funding he needs to branch out and do something different with his next movies.” Cody Hammam, Arrow in the Head

“There’s the faintest promise of something subversive in this setup, derivative (as so much of the director’s work is) but still keyed into a culturally fresh true-crime fascination. It doesn’t take long to realize, of course, that Zombie isn’t critiquing a national fixation on ultra-violence—he’s just indulging his own, without irony or much energy.”AV Club

3 from Hell is a movie for people raised on video games who think that inserting the word “mtherfcker” into every other line makes the filmmaker some type of Tarantino peer. The writing is abysmal […] you wouldn’t believe these were lines from an actual script written by an established filmmaker.” The Beat

“Whereas The Lords of Salem saw him breaking free of any box his previous work had put him in, 3 from Hell sees him stepping right back into the comfort of that box, returning to a world that he just doesn’t seem to have anything left to say about. At two-hours long, it’s a bloated, ugly experience, doing a disservice to great characters and to Zombie’s greatest achievement as a filmmaker.” Bloody Disgusting

” …it’s best to end on a high note than attempt to revive a magical alchemy, with this outing feeling far more like a home video release of The Devil’s Rejects 2.5 that featured the deleted scenes from that film more than a story worth devoting two hours of your time to.” ComicBook.com

” …a lot of fun and it feels like Zombie has grown a bit as a visual storyteller to boot. Led by some truly excellent performances by Rob’s frequent collaborators and a wholly unexpected story that thematically shares some DNA with The Devil’s Rejects, but never feels like a narrative retread in any way…” Daily Dead

“Sheri Moon Zombie’s toss of a coin transition from whimsical cutie to psychopath on occasion treads a thin line between credibility and ham, but her scenes with fellow scream queen Dee Wallace as sadistic prison warden Greta are a hoot. An ok film then, not great but not the travesty some have made it out to be.” Dark Eyes of London

“It’s silly to complain that Zombie didn’t put a lot of thought into the story, as he rarely ever seems to, working more instinctively and visually (when his movies do have real subtext, it often seems accidental or subconscious). But maybe it’s time to show him a wider range of movies and give him some more diverse influences to chew on.” Forbes

“Sheri Moon is compulsively watchable in this and it might be Rob Zombie’s funniest movie to date. The 3rd act admittedly takes a weird turn into Robert Rodriguez territory but I liked seeing these characters again and couldn’t stop smiling at the style and aesthetic.” Letterboxd

3 from Hell has moments of abject horror, but fans of Zombie’s autumnal provocations will be rewarded with his most earnest and laid back nightmare yet. The wounds are still deep, the screams still linger, but for the first time, it’s an uncomplicated pleasure to live in his jagged compositions, basking in the chummy rapport of monsters.” RogerEbert.com

“Is 3 From Hell a good film? It’s hard to say. If you hate Zombie’s work you have no reason to see it. If you liked The Devil’s Rejects you’ll probably like it – although it really only begins to be enjoyable in the second, more action-packed half.” Rue Morgue

“It’s more that Rob Zombie is out of structural f*cks to give, which translates into repugnant world-burning injustice. The Fireflys have exhausted warnings worth repeating, but that won’t stop ‘em from blabbering or killing. Alas, maybe it’s time to put these ol’ devil dogs down for good.” We Got This Covered
