SCOOBY-DOO! MASK OF THE BLUE FALCON (2012) Reviews and overview

Scooby-Doo! Mask of the Blue Falcon is a 2012 American comedy horror film about the gang’s attempts to solve the mystery of supervillain Mr Hyde.

Directed by Michael Goguen from a teleplay by Michael Ryan based on a story by Marly Halpern-Graser, the Warner Bros. Animation-Hanna-Barbera Productions movie features the voices of  Frank Welker, Mindy Cohn, Grey Griffin and Matthew Lillard.

Plot:

After bringing the Minotaur of Mainsley Manor to justice, the Mystery Inc. gang – Fred (Frank Welker), Daphne (Grey DeLisle), Velma (Mindy Cohn), Shaggy (Matthew Lillard) and Scooby (Welker) – head to the annual Mega Mondo Pop Cartoon-a-Con to catch the world premiere of a blockbuster remake of the cartoon The Adventures of Blue Falcon.

However, when a vindictive supervillain from the ’70s television series named Mr Hyde (John DiMaggio) descends on the Cartoon-a-Con convention and begins wreaking havoc, it’s up to Scooby and his friends to stop the resurrected evildoer and keep the attendees safe. They’ll have to face Hyde’s wrath, though, and all that comes with it: bats, monster hounds, zombie goo and a city-stomping giant…

Reviews:

” …a fiendishly clever (if slightly stilted) riff on Comic-Con culture, costumed fandom, the characters of classic Hanna-Barbera cartoons, and Hollywood’s knack for reviving (and fundamentally changing) beloved childhood franchises. It’s fun. It’s funny. It’s a blast for kids of all ages, even middle-aged man-children…” Blu-ray.com

“It’s a lot like every one of this awful trope, where some idiot writer thinks that the 60’s Batman was better than Tim Burton’s version of the character and wow, what IF Adam West had to save the day?! Not only was there this exact same idea (done a million times better) on the 90’s Batman animated series, but Scooby-Doo itself has done this plot at least three or four times.” Films in Boxes

” …all of the background characters and cosplay costumes are of classic Hanna-Barbera characters, and it’s so much fun to spot all the lesser-known properties like the Impossibles, the Herculoids, and the Wonder Twins alongside mainstays like the Flintstones, the Jetsons, and Space Ghost. On top of that, they also homage the Adam West Batman by having the old actor who used to play Blue Falcon be a washed-up star…” Flights, Tights & Movie Nights

“The story feels fresh and there are many in-jokes which Hanna Barbara and comic book fans will appreciate. It’s also nice that unlike the old show, and its different incarnations throughout the 80s and 90s, this one did have a mystery element even if it became obvious who the unmasked villain was by the third act.” Movieman’s Guide to the Movies
