‘Escape is the only cure’

Last Ones Out is a 2015 South African horror film about a  sceptical American man who is stranded in the middle of a zombie-infected Africa. He must trust the help of three mysterious strangers in order to make it out alive.

Written, directed and edited by Howard Fyvie. Produced by Howard Fyvie and Greg Kriek (actor in Rogue; Lake Placid: Legacy; Tremors: A Cold Day in Hell). The latter stars, alongside Christia Visser, Tshamano Sebe and Vukile Zuma.

Reviews:

“Not enough is done with the setting, there’s nothing new added to the subgenre, and I would have to say that, despite having a level of skill and polish that so many other, cheap, zombie movies lack, Last Ones Out should be one of the last you check out from any pile of potential new horror viewings.” For It Is Man’s Number

“The African setting is refreshing, but there is far too much focus on the one character who is not African, and who, for all his generically appealing status as fish out of water, comes with a personality that would make him poor company and an unwelcome presence in any country. And despite its slavish imitation of the other tropes from zombie films, Last Ones Out is disappointingly skimpy on the bodily destruction…” Projected Figures

“It sounds a lot more interesting than it really is; all of the unique elements are countered by more traditional aspects that are all too familiar to anyone who has watched a zombie film before. Still, there’s a love for the genre that oozes from this film, and I really feel like the director should be commended for putting so much into the project.” Scream Geeks

“The performances are sturdy, the terrific film locations give the project much more scope, the urgent cinematography adds to the intensity of the zombie thriller and the African flavour keeps things fresh. The real travesty is that the big picture has been shot through with mistakes and story flaws that diminish the overall effect.” Spl!ng

Last Ones Out may be South Africa’s first zombie film and it may have nothing new in terms of a plot, but there are little nuances that changes the game between this and most zombie films. The cast makes the most of what they work with and overall, it’s a middle of the road film.” World Film Geek
