STUDIO 666 (2022) Reviews and overview of Foo Fighters horror movie

” …there are some nice surprises within a finale that’s also juggling way too much. Some of the climax would have clicked better if the film had bothered exploring the previous tragedy and characters more while also cutting down some of the more repetitive recording aspects from the Foo Fighters. Nevertheless, it is a blood-splattering, infectiously fun time…” 3/5 Flickering Myth

“Grohl himself is at least reasonably relaxed, as the band’s much-loved frontman, finally in dire need of an exorcism. But there is an awful lot of terrible wooden acting from everyone else, together with sub-Ghostbusters visual effects, for which the movie expects fanbase forgiveness.” 1/5 The Guardian

“It’s a goof, and there’s something to be said for watching Grohl and the gang having so much fun. In the version I saw, you can even catch them laughing once or twice. The charm of that can only go so far, of course. This is essentially a decent SNL sketch stretched to nearly two hours.” Independent (UK)

“I would call myself a casual fan of the Foo Fighters at best, so there’s a high chance that any band in-jokes were lost on me. Despite this caveat, Studio 666 always feels accessible to any viewer […] a passionate and ridiculous horror film that will serve as a welcome distraction to genre aficionados. While I would hesitate to call it a truly good movie, Studio 666 nicely hits that sweet spot between campy trash and stupid fun.” Josh at the Movies

” …the film won’t be for your average viewer and is one that the horror community will gravitate to the most. Those who may be less familiar with the genre may see something that they will not be prepared for. Studio 666 features some frightening sequences and a lot of blood which are all things that this reviewer lives for more so than some others. Make sure to check this one out!” 89% Keith Loves Movies

Studio 666 is an intentionally trashy horror-comedy, and it seems like the cast, especially Grohl and Cummings, had a blast doing the movie. And although that alone doesn’t excuse the poor script and middling comedic scenes, its self-aware B-movie/midnight screening entity will entertain horror fans seeking an escapade involving demonic possessions, haunted mansions, and rock n’ roll legends, Foo Fighters.” Loud and Clear

“While they’re far from great actors the band does have a feel for the film’s material and are obviously enjoying what they’re doing, especially in Studio 666’s more humorous moments […] it takes a bit too long to get into the horror and, at an hour and forty-six minutes is a bit long overall, Studio 666 is a lot of fun.” Voices from the Balcony

“It’s remarkable how far McConnell’s film can coast on little more than novelty power, star power and Doritos. But there’s no denying that Studio 666 hits a wall after about an hour, and spends the next 50 minutes stumbling around in a daze. Nothing goes especially wrong with the production [… it’s just hard to remain emotionally invested in a film where everyone’s clearly just having a wacky time making home movies with their friends…” The Wrap

Release date:
In the USA, Open Road Films unleashed Studio 666 in over 2,000 theatres on February 25th 2022. Unfortunately, the theatrical release was not a success.

Background:
Dave Grohl explained: “After decades of ridiculous music videos and numerous music documentaries under our collective belts, it was finally time to take it to the next level… a full-length feature horror/comedy film. Like most things Foo, Studio 666 began with a far-fetched idea that blossomed into something bigger than we ever imagined possible.

Filmed at the same house where we recorded our latest album Medicine at Midnight – told you that place was haunted! – we wanted to recapture the classic magic that all of our favourite rock and roll movies had, but with a twist: hilarious gore that fcking rocks. And now, with the help of Tom Ortenberg and the team at Open Road Films, we can finally let this cat out of the bag after keeping it our best-kept secret for two years. Be ready to laugh, scream, and headbang in your popcorn. Studio 666 will fck you up.”

“We couldn’t be more excited to team up with Foo Fighters for a movie sure to make audiences scream and laugh,” says Ortenberg. “The Foos bring their comedic chemistry and the musical talent we all love to the big screen in this hysterical horror film.”

Studio 666 is a perfect combination of all things I love: Rock, horror, and comedy all tied together in a very thrilling motion picture,” adds McDonnell. “I am so excited to have teamed up with the Foo Fighters to create an old school ‘band’ movie. It’s been years since we’ve seen something like the Beatles’ Help!, The Monkees’ Head or Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park. Take that ’60s/’70s old-school band-film fun, mix it with horror and Studio 666 is born! I am so ecstatic for audiences of film and music to come together and enjoy our film.”

“Over the past decade, we have had the good fortune to collaborate with Foo Fighters on a variety of great projects,” say producers John Ramsay and James A. Rota. “Whether it be documentary films, TV series or music videos, they always bring their great talents and legendary sense of humour. Studio 666 takes this to a whole new level and we couldn’t be more proud of this movie. We can’t wait to share it with the world.”
