At the turn of the 10th century in Iceland, Viking prince Amleth (Alexander Skarsgård) sets out on a mission of revenge after his father is murdered…

“Amleth’s tale takes him not only through Viking culture but also to explore the Slavic cultures and their different religions, gods, and rituals. It is fascinating and makes the movie unique, you have never seen representations of these cultures recreated in such a way […] The Northman proves that Eggers is in complete control of his visions and how he translates them to the screen.” 10/10 Fiction Horizon

” …in terms of coolness, The Northman is a great cinema ride. And certainly in terms of psychedelics and mysticism. I think the only film that impressed me more in this area in recent years was The Green Knight. My only (negative) criticism is in the somewhat formulaic revenge story, although that is firmly made up for by the interesting execution. Certainly also because Eggers says a bit ‘more’ about the rudeness of people…” Filmofiel [translated from Dutch]

” …a must-see and it should be seen in cinemas. It is a violent, furious story of love, hate and betrayal. It’s also a visual masterpiece that shows the costumes in Hollywood that it’s still possible to make a stunning big movie without drowning it in CGI. Fragile, bare-chested men and cunning women simply trump the damned superhero trend.” 4/5 Filmtopp [translated from Swedish]

“There is a feeling that Robert Eggers could have done something slightly more original with the material than a straight-up revenge story, but as it stands, this is the template masterfully elevated by flooring craftsmanship in every aspect of filmmaking […] The Northman is an exhilarating, unrelenting, authentically barbaric tale of rage and romance.” Flickering Myth
