Day Shift is a 2022 American horror film about a blue-collar pool cleaner dad (Jamie Foxx) who sidelines as a vampire hunter.

Directed by J.J. Perry from a screenplay written by Shay Hatten and Tyler Tice, the Netflix movie is being produced by Jason Spitz of 87Eleven Entertainment and Yvette Yates Riddick of Impossible Dream.

The movie stars Jamie Foxx, Scott Adkins, Dave Franco, Meagan Good, Snoop Dogg, Eric Lange, Zion Broadnax, Karla Souza, Steve Howey, Natasha Liu Bordizzo, Steve Howey, Oliver Masucci and C.S. Lee.

A hard-working, blue-collar dad who just wants to provide a good life for his quick-witted eight-year-old daughter. His mundane San Fernando Valley pool cleaning job is a front for his real source of income: hunting and killing vampires…

Day Shift premiered worldwide on Netflix on August 12, 2022.

“87Eleven has done it again… Day Shift gets high marks from me across the board and much like John Wick before it has laid the groundwork for a movie franchise. Jamie Foxx is a relatable and likable hero that is surrounded by a colorful cast of supporting characters. And all of these characters find themselves immersed in top tier action sequences with the right ratio of gore and humor mixed in throughout the film.” Bulletproof Action

“The character work in this film is sadly quite poor. Heck, even Foxx’s character feels relatively one-note most of the time, as does Dave Franco’s character Seth […] Day Shift features a fun Jamie Foxx performance but is an otherwise tediously boring vampire action comedy that doesn’t execute its premise strongly enough.” Rating: C- Caillou Pettis Movie Reviews

“The characters are generally established and there are a few humorous moments. While the movie can sometimes feel like it loses sight of Bud’s financial goal to go down a more conventional story route, it’s never dull. Every once in a while, it’s nice to sit back and enjoy a good ol’ guilty pleasure, and you’re going to find that with all the blood, guts, and body parts this movie has to offer.” 6 out of 10, Coming Soon

“This movie is Netflix being cheap and cynical, churning out sloppy, empty entertainment with just enough star power to lure in naught but vaguely curious or terminally bored audiences. It’s a dog. Skip it.” Decider

” …the movie has some of the best action sequences I’ve seen this year. You can clearly see how much preparation and thought has been put into the cinematography, the set design, the physicality of each of the vampires, the wire pulls, and then the editing. And all of them come together so seamlessly that you can’t help but shower Perry and his team with applause.” Digital Mafia Talkies

Day Shift is entertaining, but it is also quite unmemorable. If 87North is trying to build another franchise here, they might find themselves having a hard time doing it. Day Shift will not make for a watch that stays in people’s heads like John Wick did. The film really needed a better vision behind it, one that could seize the opportunity to tell such a weird story in a more polished and creative way.” 6 out of 10, Fiction Horizon

Day Shift – Hunting for vampires can count on more than discreet staging and good special effects, but it is rarely convincing in the comic verve and it collapses on a script full of forcing and unspoken, moreover excessively stretched in almost two hours of viewing.” 3 out of 5, Filmy Hype

“As comedies go, Day Shift doesn’t shine and isn’t memorable for any laugh-out-loud funny scenes which is unfortunate. The cast is great and the stunts are incredible but the script isn’t very funny so even a veteran, comedic actor like Foxx has nothing to sink his teeth into (pun intended).” Grade: C+ Flick Direct

“The crude, tedious action sequences with their video-game aesthetic are an incredible trial and there is nothing interesting or glamorous about these vampires at all. There is a tiny flicker of comic potential when Seth himself is compromised, but the ethos of being “turned” is fudged so that you can sort of become a vampire while more or less staying a good guy. Pretty bloodless stuff.” 2 out of 5, The Guardian

“As it’s a horror comedy, director JJ Perry has tried to balance the humour and horror in his movie. Sometimes, he brings together both the crucial elements of the story. While the movie is genuinely funny in several sequences, the jokes sometimes don’t land.” Leisure Byte

“The story, characters, and hook of Day Shift amount to a medley of formulaic ideas. The movie’s alternately routine and incompetent execution, though, makes it almost entirely disposable.” 1 out of 4, Mark Reviews Movies

“If you’re looking for a wildly laugh-out-loud comedic thriller, then, this isn’t really it. It is, however, filled with vampire combat. Director J.J. Perry is known for his stunt work on films like John Wick—and he definitely brings plenty of carefully choreographed fight sequences and explosive vampire violence to the film. So if you’re looking for action, you’ll find plenty of that here.” Nights and Weekends

Day Shift has a ton of potential as a Netflix franchise, if the streamer decides to put more money and energy behind it. The biggest problem the movie faces, besides a terrible script, is that it looks and feels low rent, like something that was thrown together. This feeling is inescapable with so many poorly developed characters and a story that’s been sucked dry of any novelty.” Punch Drunk Critics

“J.J. Perry’s Day Shift is a terrific combination of humor, ferocity, and fun. With clever use of intricate camera angles to capture the various scene dynamics and well-choreographed action sequences, Perry has created a fantastic entry to the vampire movie genre. It doesn’t always stick the landing when it comes to the high potential of delivering emotionally compelling moments, but Day Shift is at its best when it sinks into its subtle humor through the chemistry of Foxx and Franco.” Screen Rant
