‘The legend of Dracula is born’
The Last Voyage of the Demeter is a 2023 American vampire horror film about a ship’s crew that finds they have dangerous cargo: Dracula! Also known as Dracula: Voyage of the Demeter and Dracula: Sea of Blood

Blurb:
“Based on a single chilling chapter from Bram Stoker’s classic novel Dracula, The Last Voyage of the Demeter tells the terrifying story of the merchant ship Demeter, which was chartered to carry private cargo—fifty unmarked wooden crates—from Carpathia to London.

Strange events befall the doomed crew as they attempt to survive the ocean voyage, stalked each night by a merciless presence onboard the ship. When the Demeter finally arrives off the shores of England, it is a charred, derelict wreck. There is no trace of the crew.”

The film stars Corey Hawkins (In the Heights, Straight Outta Compton) as Clemens, a doctor who joins the Demeter crew, Aisling Franciosi (Game of Thrones, The Nightingale) as an unwitting stowaway, Liam Cunningham (Game of Thrones, Clash of the Titans) as the ship’s captain and David Dastmalchian (Dune, the Ant-Man franchise) as the Demeter’s first mate.

The film also features Jon Jon Briones (Ratched; American Horror Story), Stefan Kapicic (Deadpool films, Better Call Saul), Nikolai Nikolaeff (Stranger Things; Bruised) and Javier Botet (IT films, Mama).

From DreamWorks Pictures and the producers of Zodiac and Black Swan, The Last Voyage of the Demeter is directed by Norwegian horror virtuoso André Øvredal (Scary Stories To Tell in the Dark, The Autopsy of Jane Doe, Trollhunter), from a screenplay by Bragi F. Schut (Escape Room), Stefan Ruzowitzky (The Counterfeiters) and Zak Olkewicz (Bullet Train), based on the chapter “The Captain’s Log” from Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula.

The film was produced by Brad Fischer, Mike Medavoy and Arnold Messer for Phoenix Pictures and is executive produced by Matthew Hirsch.”

Reviews:
“It’s a fascinating return to a conception of vampires as horrifically ugly beasts that anomalistically attack their prey rather than the sparkly attractive vampires of Twilight and The Vampire Diaries that have taken over popular culture’s concept of the creature in the past few decades. Øvredal might not have created something that will completely define vampire cinema for years to come, but he did create something unique…” Grade: B- Awards Watch

” …plays like a feature without much to do, pushing director Andre Øvredal to somehow create suspense out of a simple tale of survival, and one with a known conclusion. There’s early hope that the endeavor might somehow explain its very existence during the bloated run time, but Øvredal doesn’t have that kind of touch, sticking with a draggy Hammer Films tone that provides little suspense and zero frights.” 2 out of 5, Blu-ray.com

“…Judged among other Stoker adaptations and the wider landscape of theater horror, The Last Voyage of the Demeter, is a solid entry into the Dracula legacy. Even with its fumbling in the final moments of the film The Last Voyage of the Demeter pulls together the best elements of a creature feature, single-location storytelling, and use of darkness and landscape to pull off thoughtful scares.” 8 out of 10, But Why Tho?

“For fans of Dracula, this is almost two hours of enjoying an atmospheric narration about a part of the story we love so much. However, our beloved monster comes out a bit scant. The characters aboard the Demeter won’t necessarily stay with you for long either, but the horror of the whole thing is good. Øvredal holds nothing back…” Modern Myths [translated from Dutch]

“Given the amount of foreshadowing, the movie does deliver great surprises, and the plot armor is limited. Though some of the sailors are somewhat anonymous bearded seamen, there are plenty of great performances that really shine. All of the leads here do terrific, nuanced performances. Hawkins and Cunningham, in particular really flesh out their characters…” 3 out of 5, The Scariest Things
