Agak Laen is a 2024 Indonesian comedy horror film about an old man who dies in a failing haunted house ride. The operators bury his body on site, turning it into a popular attraction.

And that mirrors the movie’s performance. Deadline has reported that with 7.35 million admissions at the box office, the horror comedy has become the second-biggest Indonesian box office hit of all time after mega horror hit KKN di Desai Penari (2020).

Co-producer Ernest Prakasa told Deadline: “It’s very easy for horror movies to do well. Generally speaking, you have less of a gamble when you release a horror movie, but in the midst of so many horror movies, we offered something quite different to the audience.”

“Because of current political tension [Indonesia had a General Election on February 14th], it has created a demand for something that is entertaining. Laughter releases tension and when you can enjoy a theatre full of people and laughing together, that’s a very relieving cinematic experience.”

Prakasa noted that Agak Laen also attracted an unprecedented number of families as its audience. “We honestly didn’t expect so many families coming because the core audience of those four comedians for their podcast group were mostly youngsters, Gen Z and millennials. But for the cinema-goers, there were so many families, people brought their parents and their children, so that’s what made it so big.”

The movie was written and directed by Muhadkly Acho and stars Bene Dion Rajagukguk, Oki Rengga, Indra Jegel, Boris Bokir and Tissa Biani Azzahra, the first four of whom are part of a podcast group (also called Agak Laen), which has gained a huge online following since launching in 2022.
