It was released in October 1975 in New York City and Chicago, and previously played under the title Silent Night, Evil Night in Virginia in July 1975. It grossed over $4,053,000 internationally, managing to earn more than the film’s budget of $620,000.

For its release in the UK, BBFC bores censored several rude references during the first of the killer’s phone calls to protect the British public from swear words they may have never heard before.
