Suanggi: Ilmu Kutukan is an supernatural horror film that draws on the folklore associated with Papua and other parts of Eastern Indonesia, including Maluku, Sulawesi and the Nusa Tenggara regions. The title translates into English as “Suanggi: The Art of Cursing”.
Suanggi refers to a tradition of beliefs about supernatural powers and people who possess or misuse them. Different communities have different descriptions of the Suanggi, ranging from an apparently ordinary older person to frightening supernatural manifestations such as red-eyed entities or balls of fire.
According to the filmmakers, the power isn’t necessarily regarded as inherently evil: it could supposedly be used for beneficial purposes such as healing, yet could become dangerous when used unwisely.
The movie was directed by Dom Dharmo from a screenplay by Baskoro Adi Wuryanto.
The Mutiara Films-Subtube Studio co-production stars Pangeran Lantang, Carissa Perusset, Eugenia Yauwalata, Iwa K., Dayu Wijanto, Endhita, Stany Imbiri and Keanu Azka.
Plot:
Beni (Pangeran Lantang), a former singer whose life has fallen apart after accumulating debts amounting to hundreds of millions of rupiah.
After being away from his home for 13 years, Beni returns to the remote island of Karangkas with his girlfriend Gia (Carissa Perusset). He tells Gia that the purpose of the trip is to visit Mama Lin, his seriously ill adoptive mother. However, Beni has another motive.
He is hoping to obtain Mama Lin’s property and inheritance to rescue himself from his increasingly desperate financial situation. His seemingly straightforward homecoming therefore becomes entangled with family secrets, resentment and the consequences of his own choices.
Almost immediately after arriving on the island, Beni and Gia begin experiencing strange and increasingly terrifying supernatural phenomena. What initially seem like isolated incidents gradually point towards Aroba, played by Indonesian musician and actor Iwa K, a mysterious figure possessing deadly Suanggi powers…
