Plot [includes spoilers]:
Two years before the main events, college student Jordyn Burns was the sole survivor of a horrific massacre in which a notorious, hook-wielding murderer killed her friends. The killer, known as the Meathook Man, became a figure of local notoriety, but Jordyn was left struggling with the psychological scars of the attack, survivor’s guilt and painful memories.
In the present day, Jordyn is attempting to rebuild her life and attend university, although she remains withdrawn and haunted by what happened. Her fragile recovery is threatened when a new series of murders begins, bearing disturbing similarities to the original massacre. The possibility that the Meathook Man has returned forces Jordyn to confront the very thing she has spent two years trying to escape.
She becomes involved with Grayson Ellis, a fellow student who runs a true-crime podcast. Although Jordyn initially resists his interest in her story, Grayson’s own experiences with loss give him a reason to understand her situation beyond mere sensationalism. Together, they begin investigating the new killings, while Detective Kim Sawyer, who was connected to the original case, also becomes involved.
As the violence escalates, Jordyn’s memories and fears become increasingly difficult to manage. The investigation develops into a struggle to determine whether the original killer has returned or whether someone else is recreating the crimes.
The danger eventually reaches Jordyn’s own home, where the killer attacks again. Her friends and the detective are caught up in the violence, leaving Jordyn facing another desperate confrontation with the figure who destroyed her life.
The climax appears to bring the killing spree to an end when the wounded detective shoots the attacker. However, the killer’s body subsequently disappears, leaving the apparent victory in doubt. In the aftermath, Jordyn eventually agrees to tell her story on Grayson’s podcast, taking a tentative step towards confronting her trauma publicly. The missing body, however, leaves the door open to the possibility that the nightmare isn’t over.
