RATMAN (1988) Review of fun trashy Italian horror

RatMan is a 1988 Italian horror film directed Giuliano Carnimeo [as Anthony Ascot], from a screenplay written by Dardano Sacchetti. The original title is Quella villa in fondo al parco “That House in the Park”.

The movie stars David Warbeck, Janet Agren, Eva Grimaldi, Werner Pochath but is most notable for the titular character played by Nelson de la Rosa, recorded at the time of filming as the smallest man in the world. Although RatMan is his most famous film role, he also appeared in The Island of Doctor Moreau (1996) and across South America on numerous television programmes. The movie was filmed in de la Rosa’s homeland of The Dominican Republic.

A maniac butchers a fashion model on a Caribbean island and leaves the body to be eaten by rats. The model’s sister suspects something isn’t quite right with the police investigation and decides to go snooping on her own.

With her friend, Fred, their investigations lead them to an unknown part of the island where they discover a monstrosity of a rat-like man. The creature is killed by Fred, but the true horror of its nature is just beginning…

Rat Man was released in the UK by Shameless Screen Entertainment on 31 March 2008. It was released uncut for the first time in its most complete version, containing its original aspect ratio of 1.85:1, and the disc also contains trailers for other Shameless DVD releases, a picture gallery and reversible cover art containing the new DVD release and the original poster-style cover.
