‘Every curse has a beginning’
The Whistler – original title: El Silbón: Orígenes – is a 2018 Venezuelan supernatural horror feature film directed by Gisberg Bermudez from a screenplay co-written with his sibling Gisyerg Bermudez. The movie stars Daniela Bueno, Yon Henao Calderón and Eliane Chipia.
The plot is inspired by El Silbón, the South American folk tale involving an evil spirit that feasts on children, the drunk and the unfaithful.
In the Bermudezs’ retelling, a father struggles to discover the origins of the Whistler’s curse to save his daughter from being gradually possessed by the supernatural creature…
Reviews:
“Due to the modest complexity of its modern-day portions, I’d probably get more out of The Whistler on a second viewing, but the first screening doesn’t stoke enough of a fire to compel me to press Play again. I’m still grateful I took the single spin as it introduced me to a new slice of South American spookiness. I only wish I came away more creeped out by the content than confounded by the chronology.” Ian Sedensky, Culture Crypt
