‘His new life is haunted by old ghosts’
Between Worlds is a 2018 Spanish supernatural horror feature film written and directed by Maria Pulera. The movie stars Nicolas Cage, Penelope Mitchell and Franka Potente.
Plot:
Joe (Nicolas Cage), a down-on-his-luck truck driver haunted by the memory of his deceased wife and child. He meets Julie (Franka Potente), a spiritually gifted woman who enlists Joe in a desperate effort to find the lost soul of her comatose daughter, Billie (Penelope Mitchell).
However, the spirit of Joe’s dead wife Mary proves stronger, possessing the young woman’s body and determined to settle her unfinished business with the living…
Reviews:
“Writer and director Maria Pulera seems to be making a film for everyone and no one simultaneously. Humor punctuates several scenes and crops up at the weirdest moments. It’s hard to discern if this is completely by design or if. tried to add it after the fact to keep audience’s guessing. The effect doesn’t totally adding up, merely adding a weird quality to a picture in search of an identity.” Adrian Torres, Boom Howdy
“Nicolas Cage as the main reason to watch this interesting and potentially cult piece of trash cinema shines as Joe even before he goes off the rails, savouring the moments of pure white-trash hedonism and being kinda goofy even during the sex scenes. The final outcome might nor be on the level of Mom & Dad or Mandy, but it is worth seeing even if you are not a Nicolas Cage enthusiast.”Marko Stojiljkovic, A Film a Week
“Utter insanity doesn’t make up for the weak narrative that’s there. Cage is spectacular but not off the rails enough to sell this. I know that seems a bit weird. But really I feel like there was a bit too much held back on a concept like this. Either way a slight recommendation can definitely be given.” William Eguizabal, Film Snob Reviews
“The film has some visual effects here and there along with some great sets but they get lost in the slow-moving story and pointless scenes. Overall, Between Worlds is a disappointing film.” Horror Society
” …after Between Worlds’ half-hour setup where everything is clearly established for the audience, the film grind to a halt as its characters spend the next hour trying to figure out what, exactly, is going on. Overwrought but undercooked, the thin screenplay never reaches its full potential and struggles to compete with Cage’s eye-grabbing central presence.” Jason Pirodsky, The Prague Reporter
“Between Worlds is absurd and humorous for all the wrong reasons and it feels like a bad movie that is dead set on ruining whatever good you want to have with it. Nic Cage portrays a guy who wants to do the right thing, but doesn’t really know how because his dick overpowers his heart at every turn. His performance is more nuanced than it has any right to be…” Chris Sawin, Reel Rundown
