‘Everyone wears a mask’
The Hex aka The Heks is a 2020 South African horror film about a grieving British girl who unravels her murdered mother’s secrets. It transpires that she was cursed by a South African witchdoctor. She wants to put an end to this haunting hex by travelling to South Africa, but instead it casts her deeper into sinister depths.
Co-produced and directed by Reine Swart (actress in Triggered; The Lullaby; Z Nation) from a screenplay co-written with Katrine Labuschagne, the Twin Hearts Productions movie stars Coco Lloyd, Mari Molefe van Heerden, Mary-Anne Barlow and Christopher Jaftha. Produced by Mari Molefe van Heerden, Coco Lloyd and Andre Velts.
“The Hex has an eerie look to it but relies on jump scares and a series of hallucination sequences to jolt. Any atmosphere of dread, therefore, is lessened because of pacing issues caused by those imaginary interruptions […] On the upside, The Hex includes some South African folklore elements that are new to audiences outside that country, and it is always refreshing to discover new horror films and themes from other lands.” Horror Fuel
“There isn’t much depth to the film but there are plenty of scares. Both as Dilanne passes in and out of nightmares and hallucinations and the spirits actually show up. With the frequency of both, you’re never sure whether it’s a “harmless” scare or the real thing. There isn’t much in the way of gore, but the makeup for the ghosts is nicely done.” Voices from the Balcony
“There are some fine-tuned jump scares, the scenes with Anithi in the bathroom are quite cringeworthy, and the finale, which involves various “demons”, including a little girl, a bald-headed “vampire” like demon, and a surprise. The Hex has proven that Reine Swart loves her horror and can be quite the director and writer.” World Film Geek
The Hex was released in the USA on DVD and On-Demand by Cleopatra Entertainment on December 15th 2020.
