TRICK OR TREAT (2019) Reviews and overview

‘Middle age can be murder’

Trick or Treat is a 2019 British thriller feature film about a middle-aged man’s mid-life crisis when his estranged brother turns up with a dead body.

Directed and edited by Edward Boase from a screenplay written by Geraint Anderson, the Trigger Films production stars Craig Kelly, Dean Lennox, Kelly Shaun Parkes, Jamie Sives, Maimie McCoy, Hugo Speer, Jason Flemyng and Frances Barber.

Plot:

Greg Kielty’s life is turned upside down when his estranged brother Dan turns up, claiming to have drunkenly run someone over. But has Dan just murdered a gangster’s son? Or maybe there’s an even more sinister explanation…

Reviews:

“Anderson’s script has some satisfying twists and turns, especially the end. A fine cast includes Kris Marshall as a copper, Jason Flemyng as a taxi driver and Hugo Speer as a comedian on TV. Maeve O’Connell’s great night-time cinematography captures Blackpool’s seedy underbelly perfectly.” British Horror Revival

“Sure, it’s something of a pastiche of elements we’ve all seen before, but through engaging performances, wacky characters and a well-told story, Trick or Treat composes itself into a mosaic that is enjoyable all the same.” Film Stories

“For the most part, this is a solid, small-scale thriller in which an ordinary guy has to get out of some very extraordinary situations. The characters feel real, the situation incredibly dire.” Flash Bang

“Whilst Trick or Treat’s validity as a horror film is easily contested, it does capture a certain mischief synonymous with the season. Full of colourful performances from recognisable UK talent, Boase’s latest is a well-executed gangster caper with a killer punchline.” Starburst
