Snake Eyes is a 2021 American action thriller film featuring the titular characters and a spin-off from the G.I. Joe franchise.

Directed by Robert Schwentke (Allegiant; R.I.P.D.; Red; Tattoo 2002) from a screenplay co-written by Evan Spiliotopoulos, Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse. Produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Brian Goldner and Erik Howsam.

The Paramount/MGM/Skydance/Hasbro production stars Henry Golding, Andrew Koji, Úrsula Corberó, Samara Weaving, Haruka Abe, Tahehiro Hira and Iko Uwais.

Plot:

‘Snake Eyes’ is a tenacious loner who is welcomed into an ancient Japanese clan called the Arashikage after saving the life of their heir apparent. Upon arrival in Japan, the Arashikage teach ‘Snake Eyes’ the ways of the ninja warrior while also providing something he’s been longing for: a home.

However, when secrets from his past are revealed, Snake Eyes’ honour and allegiance will be tested – even if that means losing the trust of those closest to him…

Reviews:

“Just as Snake Eyes first learns the steps of sparring without tapping into the warrior’s spirit, his film can adopt the markers of martial arts classics while missing the parts that contain their soul. The script’s attempts at wisdom amount to little more than dime-store platitudes, and the internecine turmoil of the Arashikage clan never comes close to anything like emotional heft.” The Guardian

“Though we can hear every crack, break, and slug for miles, Snake Eyes fails to land several punches when you need it the most. Beyond the kicks and jiu-jitsu leaves a character in desperate need of nurturing. Someone who is going to roll the dice and divvy out the punches, but not get lost in their own story.” The Only Critic

“G.I. Joe isn’t (quite) a superhero, but the movie sometimes feels like a Marvel kickoff with touches of Batman Begins. It’s got enough pulsating action-for-its-own-sake that, at moments, it could be a Fast and Furious spinoff […] Movies now seem stuck in rerun mode, but the pleasure of Snake Eyes is that it succeeds in making a rerun almost feel like something you haven’t seen before.” Variety

Release date:

In the USA, Snake Eyes is released theatrically – including Dolby Cinema and IMAX – on July 23rd 2021.
