‘It knows what scares you…’

Bring Out the Fear is a 2021 Irish horror film about a couple in a doomed relationship who decide to take one last walk together… in the local forest.

Written, directed and edited by Richard Waters (In a Stranger’s House; short: Video Nasty; Sodium Party). Produced by Alison Scarff.

The Weird Pretty Pictures stars Ciara Bailey, Brian Matthews Murphy, Tad Morari and James Devlin.

Plot:

Rosie (Ciara Bailey) and Dan (Tad Morari) are a couple in a doomed relationship. Deciding to call it a day in the least acrimonious way possible, they decide to take one last walk in a favourite destination; the local forest.

However, the endlessly winding paths suddenly lead nowhere, the trees never seem to end, the sun never sets and a sinister presence starts stalking and tormenting them, trying to drive them insane. There is seemingly no escape but what exactly are they hiding from?

Reviews:

“Moves are borrowed from the Blair Witch playbook: strange forest symbols, temporal distortions, impossibly circular hikes. But Waters’ script throws up twists and obstacles at a breakneck pace, the film achieving moments of genuine tension as reality melts around the couple. As director, Waters succeeds in making a small area of woodland seem never-ending…” Electric Shadows

“A couple getting lost in the woods isn’t a new story to the world of horror, and yet somehow writer and director Richard Waters has managed to create a film that feels unlike its peers. Bring Out the Fear has a great aesthetic, generates a genuine foreboding atmosphere, and has two excellent central performances. An accomplished piece of work…” The Hollywood News

Bring Out the Fear works because the two central performances are spot-on – neither of these people is exactly bad, but they are bad for each other […] In the end, this is more about the horror the normals bring into the woods than the horrors they find there – which makes for a thought-provoking, quietly nerve-wracking picture.” The Kim Newman Website
