‘Be careful what you dig for’
The Beast Below is a 2022 Thai comedic monster movie about a massive mutant butterfly lizard that attacks humans. Also known as Leio
Directed by visual effects creator Chalit Krileadmongkon (Khun Phaen Begins; Norah; Nakee 2; The Promise), making his feature directorial debut.
The movie stars Golf Pichaya Nitipaisalkul, Fang Dhanantorn Neerasingh, Palm Supachai Suwanon, Gena Desouza and Tap Pongtap Anurat.
Plot:
A once-famous singer returns to his hometown and takes part in a water field drilling contest, hoping to win a large cash prize. However, what the contest organisers don’t know is that there is a mysterious giant beast lurking underground…
Reviews:
“The humans are quirky but ultimately too cookie-cutter and dull, the unimaginative monster provides minimal thrills, and the visual effects — while better than expected — are sterile. Nevertheless, The Beast Below may still satisfy those creature-feature enthusiasts who are always willing to overlook shortcomings out of a desire to see freakishly big animals rage against mankind.” 2 out of 5, Bloody Disgusting
“In some scenes, the lizards look very genuine and may have been photo composites. But other elements, like the desert “sinkholes”, are woefully shoddy. It is, at least, attempting to be a little different from the usual creature feature, with the Thai culture offering a less obvious backdrop. That’s probably not enough.” Rating: C, Film Blitz
