‘Scream now, while there’s still room to breathe.’
The Blob is a 1988 science fiction horror film written by Chuck Russell and Frank Darabont, and directed by Russell (A Nightmare on Elm Street 3). It is a remake of the 1958 film of the same name.

The movie stars Kevin Dillon, Shawnee Smith, Donovan Leitch, Jeffrey DeMunn, Candy Clark and Joe Seneca.

Special effects in the film were handled by Tony Gardner. He was originally supposed to handle only a few small effects, but after personnel changes, he ended up running a crew of thirty-three, including artist Chet Zar and mechanical effects designer Bill Sturgeon.

“Russell’s 1988 reboot doesn’t shy from subtext, in this case, a perhaps late Reagan Era distrust of government and its sometimes shady doin’s. If this version doesn’t quite have the old school charm of the original, it’s an often inventive remake that features some good performances, appealingly gruesome special effects and a rather dark but effective sense of humor.” Blu-ray.com

“Well aware of the cheesy, B-movie reputation of the original film, Russell and Darabont embrace the outlandish premise, but they smartly never poke fun at the threat. Instead, the well-paced humor stems from the characters and their situations. Russell’s clever direction extends to the editing, like a hard cut from the blob’s first attack to a closeup on jello being slurped up.” Broke Horror Fan

“Everything that was awesome about 50’s creature feature movies is in this movie and then amplified with pure 80’s cheese. It’s a blast!” Happyotter

“This version of The Blob is not just a great remake but is also a very solid, well-made, tremendously entertaining monster movie. As much as I may bitch about the plethora of remakes these days, I wouldn’t mind seeing so many of them if they were all as fun as The Blob.” Robin’s Underrated Gems

“Although the state-of-the-art special effects are duly impressive and come at a breakneck pace, what works in this remake is not just the improvement in effects technology but also a striking rethinking of the film’s subtext […] the post-Irangate-Pentagon scandal of the 1980s.” TV Guide

“Highly entertaining update is certainly a memorable time with a cast filled with familiar character actors, above-average effects (though a few times they’re only so-so), an old fashioned feeling to the proceedings and a last third that piles on plot twists, tension and cool blob deaths.” The Video Graveyard
