The Doll 3 is a 2022 Indonesian supernatural horror film about unsolved murders carried out by a mysterious small doll-like figure. It is a sequel to The Doll (2016) and The Doll 2 (2018).

Written and directed by Rocky Soraya (Jeritam Malam; The 3rd Eye 2Suzzanna: Bernapas dalam KuburSabrina).

The Hitmaker Studios production stars Jessica Mila, Winky Wiryawan, Masayu Anastasia and Sara Wijayanto.

Plot:
After an accident that killed both of her parents, Tara (Jessica Mila) now only has a younger brother named Gian (Muhammad Zidane) as a member of her family. However, the accident traumatised Gian, so Gian chose to end his life…

After the suicide of her brother, Tara decides to take his favourite toy, a child-size talking doll called Bobby, to a shaman to have his spirit reborn inside it.

As is the case when people do things like this, the doll takes on a life of its own, turning into a demonic serial killer who targets any and everyone in Tara’s life that stands in his way of completely monopolising his sister’s time.

Our review:
Firstly, it’s worth noting that this is not a direct sequel to the previous Doll films including the spin-off. This is a stand-alone title you can watch and enjoy anytime.

Think of this movie as Chucky but spoken in Indonesian – and instead of a legitimate criminal’s soul trapped in a doll, it’s actually a pre-teen boy.

Seriously, this is kind of a cool film. Yeah sure, killer dolls have been done to death – but when some horror movies are more about social issues and political correctness than just plain carnage, it’s refreshing to have someone take on the genre and return it to its roots: killer dolls killing dumb people.

And that pretty much sums up the film. Everyone is insanely stupid. It can not be that hard to destroy a doll like this in real life, surely? Yet everyone acts like the doll is some type of untouchable monster instead of something that needs its batteries removed and relegated to the back of the toy cupboard.

Jessica Mila is yet another Indonesian stunner, and she’s great in the film. She does everything she needs to do to tick the movie along, with a great performance also from child actress Monserrat Gizelle as the spoilt daughter of Tara’s fiancée.

The kills in this movie are brutal and are a true highlight. If this type of horror is your thing, then this is the Chucky replacement you’ve been looking for. Lots of blood and sadistic kills here to get your fill.

However, the movie could benefit from a fifteen-minute edit, including the ending that goes on for far too long as it explains a couple of story elements to the viewer who by the end really doesn’t care.

But you can do a lot worse than this, especially if you’ve been disappointed with Chucky’s last few flicks. It’s nothing new but it doesn’t need to be. This is a sadistic doll slasher that’s purely for popcorn fun and nothing else. Enjoy the brutality this movie brings to the screen.

Other reviews:
“Wiryawan, and Masayu Anastasia gave their best effort to bring the shallow characters they were given to life. It’s also quite fun to see the appearance of the young actress Gizelle who is always able to give a convincing performance even though she has to face other actors who have more acting experience – or the figure of an animatronic doll trying to kill the character she plays.” Amir at the Movies [translated from Indonesian]
