Psycho is ranked the best horror movie of all time, with the 1960 terror classic beating notable fan favourites such as Ridley Scott’s Alien (1979), The Shining (1980), John Carpenter’s Halloween (1978) and William Friedkin’s The Exorcist (1973) into the top five.
Alfred Hitchcock’s iconic horror film – which created an early template for the slasher sub-genre – stars Anthony Perkins as Norman Bates, the owner of a run-down motel where thief-on-the-run Marion Crane (played by Janet Leigh) chooses to stay and take that infamous fatal shower…

As reported by Yahoo! Movies, and according to data via WatchTVAbroad, Psycho is the highest-ranking horror film with a solid 95% approval rating from movie fans on Rotten Tomatoes.

Jeff Richey, TV analyst at WatchTVAbroad, commented: “It’s no wonder many prefer the eerie charm of classic horrors such as Psycho over their CGI-laden modern counterparts. The classics left more to the imagination, letting fear brew in the shadows and building up tension.
“As for the relentless resurrection of horror franchises, producers know the thrill of terror never grows old. Time-tested series like Saw and The Exorcist — with the latest instalments currently in cinemas — continue to draw audiences, even as they spawn multiple sequels and reboots.
“It’s a testament to the enduring attraction of iconic villains, the anticipation they generate, and the sense of community among horror fans. As the appetite for the unsettling persists, it’s clear the horror genre, whether classic or contemporary, remains a force in the world of cinema.”
Meanwhile, one of our personal faves – which we recently rewatched – The Omen (1976) only gets an 80% fan rating on Rotten Tomatoes whereas we’d stick it in the top five. And that franchise is being resurrected as an unwanted prequel, The First Omen, is currently in post-production for a 2024 release.
