Reviews:
“Amongst all the haunting and the trauma, The Shade is a film that speaks to the terrors of isolated mental illness that can, and often do, occur within families when people refuse to face harsh truths. Chipman’s film is harrowing. It’ll stick to your bones long after it’s over. Yet the film’s last few moments contain radiant positivity that refuses to let darkness win.” Father Son Holy Gore ★★★★½

The Shade has much going for it — a solid cast, a well-rendered supernatural being, and impressive direction and cinematography — but could stand to be tightened up a bit more. How much viewers will enjoy the film might well depend on how invested they get in the Ryan Beckman character. Overall, it is certainly worth a view.” The Good, the Bad and the Verdict

“It’s about thirty minutes into the film when it begins to hint at its stakes, at least in the supernatural sense. Given its underlying themes, we know what could happen at any point, and the creative team recognizes that losing a loved one to suicide is more harrowing than any demonic entity a horror movie can throw at you. Given that it is a feature debut, I do see room for growth directorially speaking.” Nightmarish Conjurings

The Shade expertly uses conventions from the horror genre to create a beautifully realized peak behind the curtain of mental health, grief, and family. It also spares no expense in showcasing subtle details to serve the mise-en-scene that will leave the viewer noticing new things with every rewatch. Each loose end is carefully tied up by screenwriter Chipman…” Trill Mag

“With The Shade, Tyler Chipman will soon be a name on many lips. He has made a film that honestly feels important. We haven’t seen many broach the topic of mental illness in this manner before and do so as accomplished as he has here. You are riveted to Ryan’s journey here, and you will struggle to find a film where you are so heavily hoping for a positive outcome on a character.” ★★★★★ Upcoming on Screen
