‘Enjoy your fright’
Spiders on a Plane is a 2024 comedic horror film about a cluster of arachnids that attack passengers on an aeroplane.
The movie was directed and co-produced by Ben J. Williams (Tsunami Sharks; Sunfall; Mega Twister; Mega Lightning 2; Pterodactyl 2; Freddy’s Fridays; The Viking Revenge) from a screenplay by Ben Daly (Mountain Shark; Pig Man; Rag Doll; Return of Krampus; Tooth Fairy Queen of Pain).
It was also produced by “Tyler-James” (Crocodile Swarm; Sky Monster; Monsternado; The Loch Ness Horror; Dinosaur Prison; Deadly Waters). Executive produced by ITN Distribution’s Stuart Alson and Nicole Holland.
The Jagged Edge production stars Alexandra DeCaluwe, Lauren Budd, Lila Lasso, Gaston Alexander, Jase Rivers, Danielle Scott, Connor Powles, Wayne Dobson, Phillip Hockley, Jenna N. Wilson, Andrew Rolfe, Benjamin Schnau, Jamie Langlands, Nicola Fishwick, Karolina Ugrenyuk, Matt Metcalfe, Rene Vrabel, Colin Nwabueze, Nathalie Didion, Sam Thackwell and Joe Warriner.
Review:
This seems like the usual set-up: ultra-cheap with irritating characters so much like most other drab, slow, dull Jagged Edge productions (Spider in the Attic, 2021, avoid that miserable bore). Then, after about twenty minutes of endless pooey and pukey jokes, it becomes obvious… the audience is intended to have f*ckin’ fun with a comedic take on monster movies.
And it largely works due to a daftness that’s irredeemably throwaway so kudos to Ben J. Williams and Ben Daily for avoiding the tediousness of the same company’s Winnie-the-Pooh movies. Unfortunately, the spiders eventually take a back seat although by that point the “eight-legged fright disaster” has morphed into a survival disaster movie and with a short running time we can be thankful for that.
Spiders on a Plane has its tongue firmly in its cheek and yep the cliched characters are a bit of a chore but most stuff aimed at younger audiences is these days. Hairy-legged terror at 37,00 Feet has always gotta be a look though and this amuses if never terrifies.
